Apple Launches "Give Back" trade-in program

Quote

Turn the device you have into the one you want.

Apple has launched a new trade in program that gives customers store credit for their old Apple products. If you do not have an Apple product Apple will still recycle the device for you.

Quote

Trade in your eligible device for an Apple Store Gift Card. If it’s not eligible for credit, we’ll recycle it for free. No matter the model or condition, we can turn it into something good for you and good for the planet.

This program is designed to encourage users to give their old devices back to Apple to give users store credit towards new Apple devices as well as tackle the problem of recycling.

Quote

You may be done with your device, but chances are it still has more to give. If it’s in good shape, we’ll help it go to a new owner. If not, we’ll send it to our recycling partner, so we can save more precious materials and take less from the earth.

And if it’s an iPhone, it could even go to Daisy, our disassembly robot that can efficiently recover the resources inside.

Apple runs on 100% renewable energy and, according to their PR, the environment is a top priority for them. This program will hopefully help Apple improve their ecological footprint by being able to reclaim more used devices and turn their old products into new ones. Something Apple has historically struggled at getting people do want to do. This program gives users incentive now.

Quote

Trading in your device is as easy as buying a new one. We’ll give you a prepaid trade-in kit or shipping label to send it off. Or you can bring it to an Apple Store. We’ll either give you instant credit toward the purchase of a new product or send your device on to our recyclers.

Users have options as to how to send their devices in and the choice is up you. This of course brings into question the security of user data.

Quote

Your data stays safe.

Before you hand off your device, we’ll show you how to safely back up and wipe your data, so you can keep all your information to yourself.3 If it’s an Apple product, it’s even easier. Just use iCloud or Time Machine to move everything in a few steps.

Helps non-Apple device users information stay safe and helps existing Apple users transfer their data over to new devices. Nice!

Something else Apple's done under the radar for years now, just to press release it for marketing.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.

Seems like a good idea, assuming the pricing is decent for both parties.  Some people don't like selling and buying used on their own through ebay or similar sites, so this gives them an alternative that feels much more like buying new, even if it's not.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

They don’t offer this in Canada, at least I can’t seem to find any source of Apple doing it here. I’d be down to trade my iPhone 8+ in for an iPhone X. Then again, probably unnecessary since I bought this in February lol.

What you get back isn’t that much but it’s pretty good.

My MacBook Pro would give me over $600 in credit towards a new device. I got the Mac for $1,250 so not too bad.

Trade in programs are jokes. They're just a way to get the item, and sell it at a higher price elsewhere. You usually get way more money if you sell it yourself. I know not all are motivated enough to do that, but still.

Of course you can get more selling it online. But you have to do that and wait for someone to buy. Apple will do everything relatively immediately without any hassle or you having to deal with people.

Also keeps the used supply down/sets a floor for it, which will encourage more Direct Sales, though this seems like something of a money loser for Apple, on net.

Judging by the prices, I’d get anything around $700-$900 Canadian. Much better than recycling my phone so someone else who wants to pay less of a premium for a used item can still use it.

That technically counts as recycling... Right?

If anything, I'd think it sets more of a ceiling than a floor.  No one is going to buy used off some guy they've never heard of if they can get it right from apple themselves for less (assuming similar condition and all that).  And I doubt they would do it if it was a net loss.  Even if this program itself loses money, which I doubt it will, I'm sure they've calculated that over all it's a good idea because they'll make more through other means as a result than they'll lose doing this.

Yeah but you have to go through the hassle of eBay and their million different fees that feel like you are getting charged for breathing, go through PayPal and pay their fees and on top of that wait a week+ if you aren’t an experienced seller on the platform to get your money.

eBay is an annoying platform filled with risk. There is no risk with Apples trade in program and you get your credit almost immediately.

It means these users next phone will be Apple products while Apple can resell these used as refurb or tear them down for components or something.

You mean the 3 or 4 fees? Stop exaggerating. It's really not bad, and you generally make more on eBay anyway since people get into bidding wars.

Don't want that much risk? Sell locally. Sell on Swappa. There are many, many other options out there.

Who needs eBay?  Something like that you can EASILY sell locally on Kijiji, Craigslist, or the equivalent.  Apple stuff is EASY to resell.  You don't need to get bogged down in shipping and paypal, you can do it all by cash in person.
