PUBG launches on mobile

As Fortnite has seen succes with its launch the Mobile launch for Pubg that has been talked about for a while has finely happened

PUBG was a technical mess when an early version came out on Xbox One last year, and though things have improved a little since, it’s still far from a polished experience. Back then I mostly gave it a pass for still being fun, understanding that it must have been a challenge to bring a notoriously unoptimized PC game to an underpowered console. But the mobile version is so good that I’m starting to rethink that assessment.

Sure, the graphics have been downgraded significantly, with emptier buildings, lower level geometry, and blurrier textures during the initial parachute jump. But it’s hard to tell on the smaller screen — the overall experience of playing this version is more impressive than seeing the Xbox version on a big TV. It really feels like, and is, PUBG. Performance is solid on the pre-production LG V30S I’ve been testing, with a smoother framerate and higher resolution than on my Xbox One S. (The game suggested the highest of three quality presets for my Snapdragon 835-powered phone; a higher quality mode seems to be on the way, presumably aimed at 2018 flagship devices and beyond.)

 

 

well it looks like the launch has done fairly okay, wonder how much this will compete with Fortnite's mobile launch

I have played both fortnite and PUBG mobile for a while now and I will say right off the bat fortnite runs much better but I am still impressed PUBG is running on my phone. Controls are identical so yeah. Other than that both need to add controller support. Competition like this is great and we the consumers benefit greatly

Just keeping this here as a Technically it's TPS. And I will not lie, I had a pleasant experience with NOVA 3 for the sake of testing. I wouldn't repeat it though. Especially competitive.

yeah I have to agree any mobile game fps is SO hard to aim it sucks to like move and do anything else at any time imo

Downloaded it yesterday and... yep, it's the full game. I won my first game where my whole random squad died and I played by myself.


Tons of things are broken. Pretty much the entire inventory system is broken. Any UI element that changes (see: weapon slots, grenade slots, health recovery slots, ammo/reserve ammo) is broken. Even with great ping (60ms for my first game) doors sometimes decide to not work, and picking up gear is laggy. Editing after playing a second game and winning again :). Everything worked this time. Inventory worked, armor worked, boosts worked, nades, ammo, everything worked. Maybe I just had some weird bugs yesterday or Tencent already fixed them.

 

BUT! The minimap works, the movement works fine, the shooting mechanics work well. I killed six people in my first game having only played mobile FPS games a few years ago. The controls are wonky at first and aiming with your thumb feels weird but it works well enough to be very playable. If you've played Splatoon for the Wii U or Switch, then I would recommend using Gyroscope controls with the touch controls. You can fine-tune your aim by aiming your phone like you do with the Joyconns or the Wii U controller.

 

The performance was great on Medium details on my Pixel 2 (SD835, Adreno 540, 4GB RAM, 1080p display) though I didn't try high like it recommended. Never saw low FPS with the exception of when jumping out of the plane.

Personally I wonder if more games like Fortnite will be ported to mobile, especially older games. For example, if an older game like TF2 or CSGO were ported it could boost Valve's money earned even more significantly. My main question is why more developers are not taking advantage of 3D touch for games, as it would make controls so much better. Look at games like Radiation Island, they used this and while it wasn't the best setup (it would swing/shoot until you let your finger off the screen), it worked well for it.

Who needs fancy graphics and high resolutions when you can get a 60 FPS frame rate on iGPUs?

This wasn't made by PUBG developers, its Tenecent (sp?). So they can still focus on PC and XBox since someone else is handling the mobile version.
