I did read the OP... And I'm sorry that sarcasm doesn't exactly convey well over the internet. So don't go accusing me of lying. I just unblocked you a week ago (you annoyed me once and I didn't feel like dealing with it; I don't even remember what it was about), so don't make me want to go and unblock you, since I have a feeling I have missed a lot of your posts that you quoted me in due to that.

You can block people ??????? I annoyed you when ??? the only person I annoy is @LukaP , again it was sarcasm I should really add kappa to my posts.

What version is the P4?

http://ark.intel.com/products/27358/Mobile-Intel-Pentium-4-Processor---M-2_00-GHz-512K-Cache-400-MHz-FSB

Actually doesn't have a model number, but theres pretty much no way an OC is possible tbh xD

That is quite a thin bezel for such an old machine. Keep Linux on it and keep it for experimental reasons, have you tried putting some new thermal paste on the processor?

I'd put gentoo on it merely because you can source everything and get slightly better performance and get exactly what you need.

Does it have a passive or active matrix screen?

Anybody have some ideas? Or suggestions on what I could do with it? I love old tech :)

If you plan to upgrade it, the best you are going to be able to do is upgrade to 1GB RAM (if you do not already have it, and assuming that IBM did not understate the RAM support like they did with the first gen 64 Bit thinkpads), and a SSD if you feel that your HDD is too slow (which most IDE laptop drives are), but you are going to pay out the nose for that (

As for what to do with it... Office machine? Explore older versions of windows (2000 pro and before)? Replace the ultranav top (yours is missing!)!. Other than this, I can not really suggest anything to do with it. It will not be worth using as a web browsing machine (saying that nearly maxing out a T7200 C2D with 4 pages open in Opera 12) (your processor and RAM will limit you severely there).

If it helps, here are the "supported" specs of that machine and the field manual.

EDIT: maybe it would make a decent DOS box for OLD games? Or a NES/SNES emulator?

It actually was understated, can handle 2gb which is what I'd consider usable for a few applications

I know its missing its nipple! I have another ibm that has a shattered lcd that I can steal the ultranav top from though

Its running Elementary OS right now, I've been considering just that :) Or as a NAS server as well for some basic stuff since it has gigabit

the T30 does not have Gigabit. It has 10/100 (and limited to AGN wirelessly). Depending on what you intend to store, it could be a NAS, but it will be held way back by the IDE interface and USB2 as well as the network interface. I could see it useful if all you are storing is documents, music, and maybe movies/TV shows.

2GB would be fine for a basic machine, as long as you do not need to browse the web (assuming you wish to have more than 1 tab open, or 1 tab and any extentions).

I would replace the nipple, but that is just a touch of OCD on my end (If it is missing, I refuse to use it. But I fund it mnore accurate than the touchpad anyway).

At this point (the 3 series), you are correct, it was still IBM. The 4 series and above are branded as Lenovo however (that is T/R 4x, not the T400 series).

That is going the wrong way (is to hook a IDE laptop drive to a SATA motherboard). With 44pin IDE (all IDE drives actually) the Pin side is on the drive, and teh cable/connector accepts them (that adapter has the connector on the adapter, making it necessary to plug an IDE drive into it).

They do make IDE SSDs, but the price is slightly high.

It's just showing, you can go to amazon or dx and it's done :)

indeed, they can be gotten elsewhere. http://www.amazon.com/Micro-SATA-Cables-Drive-Adapter/dp/B0049D7PCU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1423253102&sr=8-2&keywords=44+pin+IDE+to+SATAfor example. I freakin' love those old IBM Thinkpads. Built like a fuckin' tank and runs like a champ.

I had one along time ago and that's why I'm pro mouse nipple as people would say but it's a trackpoint and it's SO much better than a trackpad.

Then again, I do a lot of typing and casual gaming. Trackpoints do much better with FPS games like Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Screw trackpads.

Max capacity will depend on the system...

The biggest IDE HDD I saw widespread  was 500 GB tho not 2,5" obviously...

Correct, there is no cap on IDE itself in terms of raw storage, but the onboard controller only supports so much

I have a 1994 IBM Thinkpad (380D IIRC) that has a 133MHz Pentium MMX and 16MB of RAM :D

They're pretty cool, it still runs to this day but gives a POST error as the CMOS battery is well and truly dead.
