I hear you, but do you think these things are any good any longer as actual hardware components? at least as functional objects, they'd be a good talking piece, and they'd show iff their original designs, which are pretty cool TBH.

Retro machines are very nice to have as running systems. I've got an Athlon MP system that I'm proud to say still runs.

We all have systems like that. My pentium 4 pc for example. Which is stored for now in a antistatic mobo bag because I used the case to build something else into

I've got an Athlon 64 rig that I'm slowly working on turning into a retro gaming rig, complete with Windows XP. If I'm really lucky, I'd like to get a hard drive with an activated copy of XP on it, since Microsoft is refusing to activate anything from my XP install disk.

I'd like to get more RAM and a better PSU, at which point I can then add my Radeon HD 4850 to it and complete it.

Sounds like a pretty good xp gaming rig. I used to look with my dad at the original doom. That would be great to play on it as an example

Definitely, I'd like to get one of the OG Quake games on there as well. Possibly even upgrade to a higher tier Athlon as well, just for bragging rights :D

One thing I would love to do is get top tier gaming rigs from different OS eras, so WinXP, 7, and 10 just for the lulz.

Well, 10 is not done yet, so good luck with that. Maybe a win 95/98 one too?

98 would pretty quick to pull together, I've already got an Athlon MP system I can use as a base. Just a CPU upgrade and maybe a slight RAM boost and a better GPU would do the trick. I also have a Win98 install disk :D

I'll probably be stuck on AGP for any of the better GPUs from that era, though...

Sounds like a lot of bragging rights. All that's missing is a dos gaming machine now?

Believe me, it's on the list. DOS hardware is gonna be a huge pain to find though, so it'll probably be a long while before that's done.

I should mention that the G4 that I pulled these parts from was fried. The PSU went bad, and I am unsure as to the state of any parts other than the heatsink as of now. Didn't mean to ruffle feathers.

Yo, I'm actually getting that exact same card from a relative later this month, in working order.

Not that exact one, but a TF3. I wouldn't mind one of the XFX DD coolers, although I'd want one maybe from a newer/better card...

The one this card has was atrocious. 85-90C while sounding like a jet vs the TF3 that made a mild woosh and stayed around 70-73C (prior to my BIOS mods that made it a little louder but rarely passed 67C).

Not really though? Nothing with a 9600 Pro really qualifies as sleeper unless you shove it into an old AT-era case.

Don't be fooled by my inability to type, the card has the TF3 on it. The original cooler was in a scrapyard last time I checked like 2-3 years ago. ? Not that it really matters, because in the end it still died.

Haha rip.

I'm interested to benchmark it myself. I've got a variety of games I can throw at it at different resolutions and settings, so it should be fun.

If it was just a fan I would still be using it... But one of the VRAM modules died and that quickly took the rest of the card with it to the point where it shows no signs of life. Not that it was really that much of a loss since the card itself was a flaming pile of shit.
