most likely to be 2060S

Yes, some charts I saw had listed the 2060 Super at (or very near to) the top of PPD/$ list.

Desktop 1 : Ryzen 5 3600 (O/C to 4Ghz all-core) | Gigabyte B450M-DS3H | 24GB DDR4-2400 Crucial(O/C to 2667) | GALAX RTX 2060 6GB | CoolerMaster MWE 650 Gold

Desktop 2 : i5 10400 | 32GB DDR4-3200(@ 2667Mhz) |  EVGA GTX 1070 SC 8 GB | Corsair CV450M

Laptop : ASUS ROG Strix G17 : i7-10750H, 16GB RAM, GTX 1660Ti 6GB(90W), 1TB NVMe SSD

Yoga 3 14 - i7-5500U, 8GB RAM, GeForce GT 940M, 256GB SSD

Which card offers the best ppd bang for buck these days? I don’t have 2080 Ti kinda money right now btw, so that’s out 😅

@Gorgon , you usually keep pretty close tabs on these things right?

Depends on your local prices but here in Canada the 2060 Super was still the best bang for the buck (PPD/$) when I last checked.

Rough Numbers under Linux

2060   - 1100kPPD

2060S - 1200kPPD

2070A - 1300kPPD

2070S - 1550kPPD

but these numbers were with Core21 WUs but Core22 appears to scale similarly. The flip side is the larger GPUs are increasingly more efficient (PPD/W) but that assumes you get enough large atom WUs to keep them fed.

Though the Quick Return Bonus (QRB) is supposed to reward faster completion I suspect the mechanism (or calculation) is broken with the faster Pascal and Turing GPUs and that just using the TFLOPs value from Tech Powered Up database will give you a decent comparative point to compare cards (TFLOPs/$)

@Gorgon , you usually keep pretty close tabs on these things right?

This could give a rough idea of value:

image.png.1086c6e8d9a3eb4a9fa79df18650a265.png

The prices are gotten from the New Zealand PCPartPicker, by me just picking the first dual fan cooler version of the videocard.

The numbers are gotten through a combination of:

- Reviews (for power usage)

- Overclock.net (for PPD averages) https://www.overclock.net/forum/55-overclock-net-folding-home-team/475163-gpu-projects-ppd-database.html#/topics/475163

There doesn't seem to be anything that is particularly good or bad in value (other than the 'low end'/older card or the higher end). The best options seem to be the RTX 2070 and 2060 (not super for both).

In terms of power usage, these two aren't doing half bad either.

Thanks so much @Gorgon @minibois , that’s super helpful.

So it’s quite clear really, 2060 or 2070.

This makes sense really, given what appears to be a disproportionately large premium we seem to pay here for the super cards. The price cuts I always hear about in the States and Canada never really seem to filter through to us 😟

Based on the chart, I’m thinking I’ll get a single 2070 (non super) tonight, and toy with the prospect of picking up a 2060 when funds permit..

With ~30-35,000 new people, we've managed to crash the servers for 4 or 5 days running now. And Stanford has a goal of one million folders. 🤣

i really hope they sort this out soon over there.

There are far more than 30-35k new people, PCMR has gained over 20k on their own, we've gained 5-6.6K, Z event 3k, COVID19@reddit, close to 3k, curecoin has gain almost 1k, EVGA has gained 1k.

thats like 31-35K. And thats just 7 teams. They have seen a 10x increase in the number of folders over the last 2-3 weeks.

Yeha BOII! Just look at what team 0 did! Just guys folding without a team. They have a production gain of about 3x. Well they had even more but have huge swings in productivity... I think a lot of crashed clients science peeps with no team wont be as experienced and therefore not getting any work

as bad as it sounds the recent problems with FAH have lead to me losing a lot of enthusiasm for it. it was something enjoyable to do when i didn't have to constantly babysit my machines to make sure they're uploading and downloading work properly, now it's just stressful and kinda joyless. watching my PPD tank from nearly 5 million on average to just 1 million has been a kick in the arse as well - i'm running everything for the same length of time and getting 1/5th of the result, and even then i'm losing large amounts of points because things don't upload for hours, or in the case of this morning, don't upload whatsoever.

Yeha I know that feeling but dont give up now! Leave the machines running and use the spare power for Rosetta and GPU grid (u on Nvidia?) then your power wont be lost and also contributed towards COVID-19 research.

Yeah, true, but I want to see if it is going to upload itself at some point in 48 hour window. After that I will manually delete it.

I know the feeling tho, I've found myself feeling the same for short period of time, but then I hit myself in face and told myself: "WTF are you doing, if you want to donate, just go donate some money if folding is not working, you can literally use your gear to mine coins or resell it".

However, I am kinda addicted to F@H and I do not plan on stopping any time soon.

Well for my machines the situation is back to ok. Today I have idle times of about 10 minutes, until I get a new WU assigned. Thats a ok thing for me. Yes I will lose some PPD but I know how much work is being done for science and at the servers. So everybody chill and keep the rigs up. Situation clearing up!

Ok true. But I think it is overall a good thing to have so much enthusiasm and willingness to become a donor! I guess that when the event starts the situation will be back to normal.

Not exactly, the update would have been fine, but you have to realise that EOC only shows the top 6000 teams, many new teams just wont show on it, and you didnt go and check all 6k you can see did you?

Not sure if this is the right place, but here goes. Am running the Brave browser and it does not seem to like to play nice with the web control. I have other browsers installed (Firefox, Vivaldi, Opera) and they all load the web control without issue, but the Brave browser (especially right now with the huge influx of traffic for Covid-19) does not seem to want to work, doesn't matter if I select it to let everything possible run (Java, Cookies, Location etc). Any one with any ideas would appreciate it as I really do like how the browser works other than this.

Can someone un-recommend my COVID-19 post? It is no longer up to date. There are a lot more GPU and CPU work units.
