Hi-o long time LTT fan since Linus was making NCIX videos just never got around to making an account. Happy to join the F@H team. Wanted to make sure I've got it set up right. I see im folding for the team on the client, just wanted to make sure... Honestly things aren't all that great, got a variety of issues going on my my end atm. Mostly health related. But some other things too, just hoping everything works out for me sooner or later.

Fall winter will be nice, I really dont think I will need a heater upstairs (also live in south US, so it doesnt get crazy cold).  But its already getting rough in terms of summer temps.  Upstairs AC is pretty much running non stop lol.

yep dual NVME ssd slots and dual DDR4 3200 sodimm slots...will order this weekend...

Those are pretty amazing then!  I'd be joining you if I didn't already have great laptop hardware.  Even though they're older i7's at this point, my Apple MacBook Pro's are still awesome, no matter which of the 3 OS's they're running at a given moment.

Dang! I need a new laptop but I know that'll be far outside my budget. I just had a Mushkin 480GB SSD fail in my old Dell N5010, it had been flagging as failing for a long time but the terabytes written was way way way too low to be failing so I ignored it but did recently get a 860 Evo 500GB to replace it with, then last night the laptop starting hanging here and there and generally running very slowly, it wouldn't open a particular directory, so I rebooted and it wouldn't boot back up. Kept failing and timing out on a specific file while booting and trying to recover EXT4 errors by rebuilding from the journal (I think I'm remembering this right, it was like 1 AM). So tonight I tore it down, repasted the CPU and cleaned out the heat sink (should have ordered a new fan but I forgot, and should have replaced the BIOS battery but didn't have one on hand), and pulled the Mushkin, made a backup of the home folder just in case, cloned it to the 500GB SSD using Clonezilla on a desktop PC, and re-assembled it all. Works great! Not only is it running cooler and quieter (old paste was about 5yrs ago and dried out) but the new SSD is wizzing along. Sadly this thing is only Sata 3Gbps, I'll never saturate the drive.

 

Now that the daily driver is repaired I can go back to focusing on the folding system. I'm trying to learn how to undervolt my RX580, found an awesome looking tool, but it seems to only be for 19.10 and 20.04 not 18.04 like I'm running. FAHControl won't run on 20.04 because Python2. I heard they're looking to fix that soon so may just put up with stock volts on the RX580 for a bit to get it up and folding for now. I'm going to give it a few more hours of trying, radeon-profile seems promising but the tab I need to actually make adjustments with is grayed out so I need to figure that out or move on to something else. I just need to be able to set the highest pstate voltage to 1070mv from 1150mv or whatever ludicrous voltage it's running out of the box. On second thought maybe I'll just flip the BIOS switch to the silent BIOS, I think it runs a lower voltage/clocks which might be good nuff.

Hey @Zberg the next event will be the 13th June, Summer Folding Sprint, this small folding event will run for one week leading up to the summer solstice! Can you take the heat!

 

2020 Folding month, TBD(expected between September and November), Our longest and flagship folding event, this is where you get folding event badges!

It seems like in the UK we only have Intel powered G series laptops on the Dell site... Shame really.
