What should I expect from my first gaming PC experience?

Long story short, I'm moving from an Xbox one X on a 4k TV to a PC which will play on a 1080p 144hz monitor. (Haven't got the PC yet, but I am expecting either a 1080 or 1080ti graphics, but we'll see)

 

Before I fully commit, will you guys sell the idea to me. What will blow me away, especially compared to console gaming.

Game wise. I play a broad selection, from Fallout to Cod, to classics like Monkey Island.

 

I just want to feel like I am definitely making the right decision to spend the money on this adventure considering I've got an X

The 1080ti is about 4.5 times as powerful as the GPU in an XBOX 1X. A PC will not only give you more fps but also the capability to play more games that the Xbox would never be able to play, while maintaining the Xbox functionality. Sold yet?

You can play games generally at higher details and frame rates. And if you like Bethesda games, we probably won't see you for a few months while you download and try all the mods.

For one thing, the overall quality of the games is better. This is due to more powerful components and having more system resources at your disposal.

 

Next, there's a better upgrade path with a PC that doesn't have you buying the next big thing every year.

 

There is also the functionality of a PC, it can do so much more than play games and stream media.

 

Storage is also a big factor, you don't have to mess around with external drives very often with a midrange-higher end PC.

 

Speed is another big one, well-built gaming PCs can do everything faster than a console, even a console of the Xbox One X's caliber.

 

There is also a much wider range of games, and the overall experience is better. For FPS games, nothing beats a keyboard and a mouse. The response time is much faster than a controller and you're able to react much faster.

 

Also, the PUBG experience is the best on a PC. Not sure if you play that, but if you do....Fortnite too(again, not sure if you play it), in fact with most if not all the major esports games, the PC is the best way to play. Not sure if you remember this detail, but nearly the entire Battlefield fanbase played on PC since it was that much better than console.

As far as capability goes, the 1080Ti is nearly 5 times more powerful than the Xbox One X's GPU. In fact, the 1080Ti is the most powerful gaming-specific card on the entire GPU market.

 

CPU and RAM is also a big selling point, the CPUs and memory you find in PCs is usually better in architecture(CPU), speed(CPU and RAM), and quantity(RAM) than a console. With expansion options that will allow you to go up to 64Gb memory on modern consumer-grade CPU platforms. Not the best option if you're only gaming, usually 16-32Gb is enough.

For a newcomer, I would recommend taking some time to get used to the keyboard and mouse with some simpler, slower pace games such as Minecraft and working your way up to the Fortnite/PUBG/CS:GO level.

60 fps is night and day better than 30 fps. I have never played at 144 fps so I can't comment other than to guess it must really be an enormous jump from 30 fps.

Oh man.. it is only downsides.

1. The games are cheaper as you don't pay the licensing cost to Microsoft anymore. So you are not helping Microsoft anymore
2. Super complicated to start a game. You need to lift your arm, extend it over an exceptionally large distance, to reach this thing called a mouse, which you then need to lower you hand, and then move it across the table, like you are doing a trip around the world, to reach this the Start button on the screen, and your need to lift you index finger, and lower it with such an immense force to press a leaver system on the mouse where it do a very annoying "click" sound, all to have this massive menu, with this extensive list of programs and games,that you need to scroll through, to find your game, and once again you need to lift your index finger to amazing heights, and bring in down to massive force. And the worst part, is that some games don't start yet, NO! There is a menu thing at startup with game options! How ridiculous!
3. When you start a game, it starts.......... that... is.. TERRIBLE! On console you start the game, and then it need to download this extensive patch when you want to play the game. This is great! I really enjoy this, as I can prepare my lunch, go to the bathroom and take my time for #2, and make my coffee... here on PC.. the game starts right away due to this background updating system... how annoying! Now I can't do all this.. I NEED :urgh: to play the game... how annoying.
4. Seizures. I don't know about you, but the graphics on the PC are just too high... I always get seizures due to how high the graphics are. Once I was playing a game with realistic graphics, and took my hand to grab a bear jug on a table, and BAM hit the screen... so confusing.
5. Too many things to do. I mean a PC you can't just play games, the system can do many other things, and it is all too confusing.

 I would stick on XBox One to be honest.

everything, once you have your own gaming computer you don't want to touch a console ever again, the graphics, the variety of games, the wonderful world of real time strategy games, the way you can customize the hardware and OS, hardware is way more powerful and you can put a bunch of blocks, tubes and radiators inside your case and microsoft can't do sh*t about it because it's your rig, not theirs.

On a serious note from my last one.

The reality of things is that it is a diminishing return actually. This is why consoles are having a difficult time being better than the last generation. The Switch is the exception, as it competes in the mobile world. I expect Nintendo to release a Switch Pro of sorts, where it would be equipped with a faster Tegra (one that isn't for cars) once available from Nvidia. But anyway.

 

PC will give you the ability to really enjoy the game with the original artwork that was designed, something you can enjoy the most with a nice IPS panel, especially those that are color calibrated at the manufacture, and features a true 8-bit panel (and not a 6-bit panel with color emulation technique to try and do the missing colors). But of course, all this is more money. You can also enjoy faster frame rates, like a solid 60fps in all your games. And later on, if the GPU can't keep up with the latest visuals, you can dial them down in such a way that minimizes the visual impact of reducing them to you, while maximizing the performance, and still be better than console, and still enjoy a solid frame rate. Sure you can get a panel like you are planning on getting and enjoy the faster frame rates than 60 for smoother action.

 

In addition, you have a keyboard and mouse. While I would still keep the XBox One controller next to the PC, this gives you another controller setup to play games. Some games plays better with keyboard and mouse (especially once you get used to it), and others shine more with a game controller. You can use your XBox One controller on your PC. Windows has drivers for it natively. Depending on the controller, you may need Bluetooth if you don't have it (you can get a tiny USB one from amazon for a few dollars which does a fantastic job), or you may need Microsoft XBox One wireless receiver (you only need 1 of them. It handles up to 8 controllers if I am not mistaken)

What can you expect?

Seriously these days if you play the game for the game and not hung up on frames or strict resolution settings then the difference is largely the controller versus keyboard/mouse.  Although I have to say you can do a lot more on a pc than you can on a console, like having multiple documents open, copy paste, talking on forums and the like.  Also downloading and playing around with open source software and operating systems is also fun.

Thanks for the replies so far. I think most of whats been said in here is expected really.

I think until I see in person a 144hz monitor in action with higher frame rates I won't really understand.

 

In terms of graphical quality, what should I see different:

Xbox one X in 4k with HDR enabled vs 1080p with higher frame rates.

 

Will there be a better depth of terrain etc on the PC using a higher end GPU.

This will be a big purchase for me. I've never used a mouse and KB for gaming etc, I just really want to make sure this is going to blow me away compared to a console.

 

There is a reason all the best streamers, e sports etc are on PC, surely.

I will fund most of the machine by selling my Macbook pro.

It's my day to day laptop, but to be honest, apart from football manager and browsing, it's a very expensive machine that just works really well compared to a laptop, but it's way over powered for its intended use.

You'll be blown away, but you'll be slapped by he amount of work you need to put into learning stuff. Game publishers often make shitty PC ports, sometimes on purpose, and it can be difficult to makes things work right sometimes, regardless of how many times faster than the consoles the game runs just fine on it may run right at all (see the AC unity launch for a good example). A good port should run on a low end gaming PC, as that's what consoles are, very low end gaming pcs. The regular ps4 is equivalent to a radeon hd  7870 gimped, and the original xbox one is like a 7850 gimped. The bulldozer based architecture from the amd cpus is basically trash, and used to be alright for budget gaming PCs IF you overclocked the bejesus out of them, but in the consoles they run at like 1.6-1.8Ghz. So you'd think these games would run on about damn near anything right? It's not the case unfortunately sometimes, but certain games like titanfall 2 are excellent ports. Some are not.

 Also, DRM is aggressive and hinders performance in some cases. But as you learn, you get a lot of out of it, for example little things like using whatever controller you want, and it's really rewarding as eventually you won't be intimidated by things going wrong or breaking, you'll know exactly what to do. You'll be doing more research before buying AAA games, waiting for people to say if things are a good port, etc. You'll also have a lot of cheap steam games that are pretty great, but you'll never be able to play them all. You will drown in games.

A 1080 ti can run 4k at mid to low settings and still see 60fps.If you want either 1080s look in to a 1440p monitor with 144hz or higher if you want  first person shooter games.Like said 1070 ti is 1080 speed and cheaper once the video card prices come back down.Once you cross over to pc gaming you'll never own another console.Like said with the right gpu and monitor the graphics will look amazingly better.The game options are nice and you can play some xbox games on windows now.

not to mention the complete lack of loadscreens is just unbearable! how am i supposed to find out that Barbarians and Monks take 30% less damage or that with a running start you can leap across larger gaps!?
