Snapchat stock value plummets

So apparently Kylie Jenner, one of the Kardashian clan, tweeted she no longer uses Snap, and snap lost 1.3 billion dollars of their stock value.

Celebrity Kim Kardashian's half-sister posted: "sooo does anyone else not open Snapchat anymore? Or is it just me... ugh this is so sad."

Snap's shares sank after Ms Jenner's tweet about Snapchat's re-design to her 24.5 million Twitter followers.

After dropping almost 8%, shares in Snap closed 6% down on Wall Street, and are now back near the $17 price at which the shares were listed when the company floated on the stock market in March of last year.

 

That’s one hell of a tweet. It’s kinda crazy that a single user of a platform holds that much sway.

 

In other news Snap’s chief received almost $700m in total compensation last year... I’d be more worried about that if I were an investor, not that Kylie isn’t on the platform anymore.

im laughing my ass off, one person stops using it and BAM EVERY SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL!!!

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

I think it's the same as any other social network: unless they sell some data, they don't and only rely on faith, hence why their valuation is so high since its the only form of value created on some sense

It wasn't because of the tweet it was because they updated it and it's a horrible update that shoves ads at you and isn't UI friendly. They also refuse to revert back so people are leaving and stocks are falling

The UI sucks now but still doesnt invalidate its use. I will continue to use it as its my primary way of communication. 

 

But what does piss me off is one stupid b.....ugh....person can dictate the rise and fall of a company. People are so wrapped around these famous people that they take everything they say and do to heart. This is not the world I want to live in.

snapchat is kind of a one trick pony so it's not surprising that their stock is so volatile

not different from one of the features that insta copied off snap, but it's not the same as fb messenger & whatsapp, they have group chats, longer texts, you can view the messages longer, snap just isn't a texting platform while fb messenger and whatsapp are, I don't believe in snap's future and it will probably die in a few years

Linus is going to love this article. Snapchat finally takes a step towards actually becoming profitable only to lose many of it's users to another similar free service which doesn't have advertisements. Lets be honest... Who didn't see this coming?

That is the world we live in. Who uses Snapchat? Teens. Most teens are easily influenced by their idols and famous people. The human logic at that age goes: "If they are famous, it is for a reason, I want to be famous too... so I'll follow their footsteps...", even though they are no relationship between an app or clothes or whatever with being famous, and certainly don't want to be left out. Keep in mind at that age, critical thinking isn't there yet. They are not mature enough floating between childhood and adulthood (and hence the many difficulty that many teens faces). Teens are also pushed by peer pressure. When a person has something somewhat intelligent to say, it isn't with a selfie, stickers on their face, and a small text. Just saying.

In the end they all do the same thing. All can send photos, videos, text. Ones about security, ones about not saving pointless photos or conversations  and the other is the kid eating glue in the corner. 

 

Im not saying its the future and will die with other platforms we use today. People will get tired of snap, insta, messenger when something new and shiny comes out. But besides that, snap is still the best app to take a quick photo that only really needs to be seen once and send it to someone.

But the real people who made Kylie famous are the people over 30. 10 years ago people watched the dumb show and supported it. Part of it is still the older gens fault for giving these kids these types of people to look up to. 

 

On a side note I would say most people who use snap are mid 20's like me.

Most teens really aren't... Maybe 13 year olds, but most people in my high school think for themselves. I really hate when people bring up the standard "Oh well they just can't think for themselves, they idolize celebrities and fall into peer pressure" Most of my friends have stopped using snapchat due to the UI changes and outflow of ads. I actually wasn't aware of the celebrities' thoughts on it. Maybe that's my group though...

 

But for those who didn't know, snapchat updated their UI, and made "stories" go into the same section as chats, (Left swipe) and gave snapchat magazines and advertisements the right swipe. This decision clutters everything in the UI, and now you can no longer scroll through stories, you have to scroll through your chats. Its just a bad decision in general, and was made all for the sake of snapchat magazines that no one cares about. Hence why people are leaving, it was meant to be a messaging app, not an advertisement method.

well yeah of course it's the best for that use case, since that's exactly what the app was made for, I just don't see how this will stick :)
