It's not a matter of preference, it's a matter of what I need in a given situation. Kind of difficult to take a full tower with a waterloop with me to a meeting or on the train.

Both, like others have said, it's not a matter of preference but using both wisely when appropriate. I cannot lug around my desktop to work. Sometimes travel is required of me, and my laptop is my companion along those trips. When I am home and need to do some serious work I don't get done at the office, it's my go to. I also don't play games on my laptop regularly (other than a few emulators or something to pass the time), that happens on my pc.

Both.
Desktop for when I am home, laptop when I am not.

I do not game on my laptop, other than maybe a rare easy to run game.

Both, depending on what I'm doing, and which one's are torn apart.

Best Excuses:

#2(complex) "Obviously there was a flaw in the material, probably due to the inadvertent introduction of contaminants during the manufacturing process."

For gaming desktop all the way, why? I can upgrade it, it has better temps and better performance.

For work stuff, it depends on a few things, do I need to be flexible then laptop, do I need a lot of power and I can do it at home, then desktop, how long time would it take for me to get home and if I really need the power my desktop has.

Sounds like a challenge!

For the most part I'm exclusively a desktop user because of the expansion options it offers and only really use a laptop when my power requirements are low enough that the computer will be dead long before I need more power for a task.

An example would be that I use a pitiful Toshiba laptop as a media center pc as long as I'm only watching 720p content it will do the job for the foreseeable future.

I use both plus a tablet.

Why?

Either one of my desktops torn apart at any given moment or a big folding/BOINC event is occurring where I don't want to bother the desktop while it crunches.

During those times I use my lappy.  Or, I use the lappy while on orders and overseas since lugging a huge desktop is out of the question.

The tablet goes everywhere with me, which I use it mostly for some light quick puzzle games, watching videos, or reading.

Desktop preferred. Easier to upgrade, easier to use multiple monitors, and a laptop will never be as powerful as a desktop.

A desktop will always and will forever be the best bet in terms of gaming on a PC. I highly recommend you never buy a PC from a retail store and especially not a Laptop from your local Best Buy. The way they scam you is by giving you a product that has terrible airflow and generally will overheat as you use the thing over and over for any general type of gaming. Going for a Desktop and building your own will always be my number one recommendation for anyone who is looking to purchase their own PC.

What I would do:

-Figure out what you will do with your PC

-Study on how to build a Computer from scratch

-Get an estimate on how much you will spend for your PC ( I generally would spend at least $800-$900 on a PC)

-Figure out what CPU will be the best for you. (Just gaming go for Intel / Streaming to Twitch or Video Editing AMD's Ryzen Lineup)

-Find out what Resolution and Refresh Rate (Hertz) you will play your games on. (Buy your GPU Accordingly)

START BUILDING! :D

I have no real preference. I like using both but it's just a matter of convenience for what I'd need.

I don't think some responders fully understood. Of course you're not going to be thinking of dragging a desktop for traveling when a laptop is easier to transport, duh. The question was which do you prefer, not which is more situational.

No matter how baller the laptop is, the keyboard will never feel as good as a nice mechanical (MSI giant notebooks ect being the rare exception). Tactile feedback alone makes me prefer a desktop, but I can laptop as well, just not as nice feeling.

Yes, I know you can connect a mech keyboard to a laptop, it's just hella impractical when you make a portable device look like it's connected to life support.
