The funny bit is that I was expecting the Ryzen "PRO" models to have ended up over with Apple, rather than the GPUs, but it is something good for them.

Could be, or it's a 4GB stack. Vega will have 8GB and 16GB versions after all. What's interesting is that it's not an SK Hynix modules. Most likely Samsung, and given that Apple lists the Vega GPUs with 400GB/s it makes sense.

Samsung's HBM2 is slower than Hynix, and also more quantities available. NVIDIA has been using 3-4 modules on the Tesla P100 for ages now.

 

The Vega Frontier Edition has 16GB HBM2 at 480GB/s.

Samsung GDDR5 is faster at the same clock or lower. Due to tighter timings. 

 

Samsung GDDR5 can push towards 9.5GHz+ on air/water easily. Micron needs cold to go fast because it sucks.

Well, if Apple signed up to buy a lot of units for their products, which is a high-end SKU and not a massive seller, those supply issues would have gotten a lot worse.

Apple signing up for hardware is rather a big deal, look at the past with a lot of the Intel mobile chips and Iris Pro. Apple had the entire production output of those chips for almost a year before it was in any other products.

For as much a RX Vega is "late" is a talking point, nothing seems to suggest it was ever going to be outside of Q2'2017.  (AMD has just be out of the high-end market since the 1080 launched.) So, Vega itself has launched in that window, though no RX version in quarter. If Apple locked down a big supply of Vegas, in the early part of 2017 or late 2016, it could also explain why the 2.0 Gbps HBM2 never showed up.  While HBM2 was running late, the Apple agreement would have eaten up the entire year's supply.

It won't be an exclusive deal or anything but it's great that they have that deal in place, means a decent amount of guaranteed sales which is good. Also actual consumer Vega products can't be that far off considering Apple announced the iMac Pro which has a Vega GPU in it.

My assumption is we see Vega in mid-August, but, for the PC side of things, they really need the drivers in a good state. The Apple versions might be copies of the Frontier Edition, but Apple also has unique drivers for it.

Yea that 16GB VRAM does make me suspicious that it's a Pro card, FE or Radeon Pro.

1080 was almost exactly a year ago.  GPU generations are normally closer to 18 months. So Vega isn't late, that's just the consumer base being annoyed that AMD took this generation off in the high-end.

Might even be a SSG version, actually.  And the Professional version makes the most sense, since the actual product is using Xeon CPUs and ECC RAM.

According to SK Hynix HBM2 size, a rough calculation gives me about 470 mm^2 for the core. However those might be Samsung HBM2, and therefore dimensions can differ a bit.
