Just FYI I prefer the Apple ecosystem personally for most daily tasks, but I still LOVE my PC because I can build and tinker with it... And games. All the games.

It comes with 8GB 56 CU Vega or 16GB 64 CU Vega. (vram is HBM2)

I think what they've managed to cram into the iMac Pro is pretty impressive, actually. And this is coming from a guy who refuses to use any Apple product under any circumstance whatsoever. (I will not use an iPhone if it meant saving my life.) 5K display, 18 core Xeon, 128GB ECC, Vega, and 4TB SSD (these are probably ridiculously fast like the ones in the MacBooks)? I might have to cut off a few limbs, but damn...

 

It does seem a little overhyped, though. We shouldn't go overboard with our expectations, nor bash Apple for being Apple. Remember that it's up to an 18-core Xeon. It starts at 5000 dollars. Who knows how expensive the top-tier model will be? A fully maxed-out Mac Pro was over $10000 back when it first came out. Considering that Apple's been slowly ramping up prices on all of their products lately, I wouldn't be surprised if they did the same with the iMac Pro. 

 

It's probably going to throttle, the Vega GPU in the base model is probably going to be garbage (relative to the full-fat one), most of the target audience won't find ECC that useful, it's a goddamn AIO...we shouldn't hype this thing too much...

 

But then again, Apple is almost a trillion-dollar company. They can pull off some incredible things. I'm pretty hyped for this, to be honest.

 

How does everyone feel about the new iPads? 120Hz displays? Isn't the A10X only around 30% faster than the A9X? Will the GPU even be able to take advantage of the extra refresh rate?

The lowest core# and frequency Vega is slightly worse than a 1070 AFAIK, so in the Mac Pro, it should be slightly faster than a 580 and slower than a 1070. In other words, you are paying $5000 for a 7820X (running at 2.something GHz) and a more power efficient Fury (X)......

As a workstation card, the 1080Ti is a very good proposition for those that don't need the compute characteristics of Kepler. Indie animators and high complexity artists would look at this if their software of choice is CUDA accelerated, or benefits from the horsepower of a Titan class card.

well I would expect to see vega Skus of 4, 8, 16GB but the iMac Pro is Full Fat Vega and slight cut down. Looks like a cool AIO but would prefer a normal desktop.

We know the specs of the lowest end Vega card and we have seen leaked benchmarks. This card is by no means a 1080 Ti, in order to be on par with a 1080 Ti the GPU would have to be watercooled and running at (at least) 1700MHz+.

No it won't. The Vega card will be thermal throttling so a 1100MHz Fury X would be pretty much on par with the Mac Pro's GPU.

I think you summed up my feelings too. Really curious to see what the full-spec iMac Pro goes for and excited to see what on earth kind of specs the 2018 Mac Pro will have. That said, I think it's safe to say if AMD end up in next year's Mac Pro, Nvidia will never be used again. At this rate, I could whole heartedly see (though will likely not happen as they will likely drop Intel and with ARM) AMD being bought up by Apple if AMD cannot gain any meaningful consumer revenue and/or profit in the next two years. What's keeping AMD shareholders happy right now? Sony and Apple.

You get a pretty decent machine in an AIO aka prebuilt machine with premium materials and a 5K screen strapped to it. If you see comparative high end AIOs and the tax you pay for a small footprint with beastly hardware its not so far off. Yes its expensive in comparison if you built it yourself but can you achieve the same size? and dont forget companies pay for support as well in those prebuilt machines apple offers that included in the price.

I like how if you don't think these new iMacs are worth it it's because you're a childish Mac hater. I have my MacBook Pro sitting right next to me. 

 

I just think these iMacs are overpriced. Especially with adobe suite and other creation products now working as well or better on pc. I can't stand working on photoshop on my MacBook or iMac anymore because the pc version just works so much smoother. 

 

I like macos a lot. I don't ever see myself switching from doing audio stuff on Mac. But apple just charges too much for hardware these days.

So, by the time you part out an 8-core Xeon with 32GB DDR4 ECC, 1TB ultra fast NVME SSD, 5K Display, a nice case, and a 3584 core Vega GPU (probably around a 1080~) with 8gb HBM2 you're looking at around $3500~.
