AMD ryzen/vega apu!

I can't wait Ryzen and Vega on one chip in a laptop we are going to see some great power savings and graphics performance for this chip I believe will be perfect for those 1080p laptops and can do some serious gaming

Ehhh. We'll see how they actually perform. I've never considered AMD for a laptop and I doubt that will change with this chip line. They've always ran hot and sucked toooo much power.

Seeing how well Ryzen undervolts when you drop the clockspeeds below 3GHz, I'm really interested to see what happens when they actually set out to make a low power chip.

Have you looked at Ryzen power consumption numbers? They're lower than Skylake, Kaby Lake and Broadwell-E. These APUs will have better performance per watt than 7000 series mobile CPUs from Intel, if nothing goes wrong.

Ryzen's process runs really well at low power, which is what is going to make their Mobile offering really interesting.

 

Also, it'll come with much, much better graphics on a baseline mobile. FreeSync panels? It's going to be really interesting to see this product in 2018.

in this market consumers often buy intel for the name. So AMD in addition to having a superior product needs to get the message across to the non tech savvy consumers and to computer sales people and through the channels. 

 

Also traditionally AMD APUs meant that you are trading off CPU perf in exchange for graphics perf. AMD needs to make sure everyone knows this is no longer the case with Zen cores...

A big step for them is actually OEM partners. Dell, HP, and more were listed last night. 

The APUs also showed 50% less power usage on their graphs along with this massive performance gains. 

 

It's been over a decade since AMD tried to get those partners.

And for exactly the same reason many enthusiasts often avoid laptops with AMD processors.

I hope this new performance/efficiency is enough to tip the scales and avoid that stigma.

The R7 1700 has 65W TDP. AMD CPU's are no longer the heaters they have been in the past. Polaris also has really small power draw when underclocked and undervolted. I'm hoping it will be similar with Vega.

40% improvement over the previous APU performance doesn't even comes close to say a 560. I am guessing power constrains or space ones is it's Achilles heel (as always when it comes to APUs) but seems like a good stopgap between intel's igpu and a dedicated one. But still probably not capable of any serious gaming at all and pushed as "MOBA games!" or "esports!" but well:

Except LoL, Dota2 and CS:GO are the most played games around.  If the APU can run that competently at 1080p in a small-ish laptop, that's going to be rather appealing to the college-age set.  Is it not?  Also, that 4c8t chip means they can also down-tune very easily to save power.  (That's where a lot of the modern efficiency has been found, aside from the process shrink.)

 

"Enough" computer power is really important in laptops.  This looks to be that.

Super excited for these honestly. While amd kept falling behind in ipc during the bulldozer age, their apus still held on. Leaping from a bulldozer based architecture+GCN 1.2 GPU to Ryzen+Vega is gonna give a huge jump and probably put them in front of Intel again. I wonder ow much perf/watt we could get with these when gaming...
