[update2]Razer laptop prototypes stolen at CES

Bsmith

Well, this could have only happen between days I guess. Are there no security guards, no security system on the glass enclosure? Every Smartphone at electronic stores is secured through an alarm which sometimes reacts very sensitive....

The glass enclosure is too big for one person to lift alone, so this smells fishy. Or am I missing out on something?

Though I am not a Razer fan, this should not happen at fairs like CES.

You know, it's gonna be so surprising/weird when we see the new MBP next year with 3 screens Apple saying they invented it.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Why? Theft has been occurring since the dawn of time.

On another note, now i'm waiting until the dummy who stole the unit ends up trying to sell it.

So, no one thinking its an inside job?  I tend to discount the "industrial espionage" and reverse engineering angles as the over active imaginings of children who've seen too many movies.  I somehow doubt that a crack team of engineers are waiting to get their hands on a glued together laptop with non-fuctional hinges in to their workshop to figure out it's 3rd party mysteries.

Think it's more likely that someone wanted a new rig and took it.  Probably one of the Razor PR personnel.

On the wan show linus said that the prototype with hinged displays was a mock-up, the prototype with the displays that slid out was a working model.

That's quite the tin-foil idea. Entertaining the idea that it IS 'inside', if it ever came out that the company did this as a PR stunt, that would look extremely poor on the company. I doubt they would risk such self-defamation. The tech field has high stakes, and a lot of these companies, including Razer, are interested in the long run. To sabotage their own company for such a short-lived limelight is quite a ridiculous idea.

Anything is possible, though, so we'll have to see.

Well the razor part was meant as a joke, I was actually thinking hotel/convention centre staff sort of inside job.  Probably should have spelled out that much, so; sorry about that.

Tell that to quite literally every car they copy which their court system allows them to do. Car makers have stopped trying to fight it since every time they take it to Chinese court they lose on the grounds the car has a different name so not coping case dismissed.

Personal stealing is hugely frowned upon, corporate stealing is the norm.

In China and Hong Kong, stealing is highly looked down upon. It's a really big crime for them :(. It's not something someone would do lightly.

They say they were prototypes; but I wouldn't be surprised if the hard drives had evidence on them that would land Hillary behind bars for good. Or proof that the Russians had nothing to do with the DNC and other 'hacking' in the 2016 election.

it is called industrial espionage, assuming a company stole it.

Its not like they dont steal from customers *cough* $500 for GPU case *cough*

I don't think that's "stealing". Imagine the cost to bring that to market. You need to get driver support for the laptops, engineer an enclosure that supports most GPUs, and they had to figure out how to get the signals over thunderbolt, which means they need to account for latency. Add the fact that the engineers needed to be payed, as well as the small market size, it adds up to an expensive product. Razer isn't in the game of being nice and making cheap things, they're in the game to make money. If you do want a cheap gpu enclosure, find expresscard to pcie converters.
