Apple may be leaving the router buisness

Apple's AirPorts and Time Capsules days are possibly numbered, if you are an Apple ecosystem user.

Reports are coming in that people working on this department are being moved away, where some are moved to the AppleTV side.

This suggests that Apple may be pulling out of making routers.

The Verge reports:

Apple has disbanded the hardware division responsible for its AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express, and Time Capsule products, according to a report from Bloomberg. The reassignment of employees signals that the company is making a quiet exit from the home router business — just as competitors like Google increase their focus on providing consumers with speedy, reliable Wi-Fi connectivity that blankets entire homes.
 

Apple’s router products were last updated in 2013 with support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi. But that was long before companies like Eero, Netgear, Google and others began manufacturing router systems that use a mesh network approach for better whole-home coverage. Apple’s AirPort devices, which remain available for sale, range in price between $99 and $399. Bloomberg reports that some engineers who formerly worked in the AirPort division have been moved over to Apple TV.

Apple has exited from making monitors already, and now this. We see again that the Mac Pro is neglected yet again. Do you think they will leave something else?

their routers were actually really good... a bit overpriced but they are really reliable and can actually handle lots of clients with good results.my guess is they weren't selling so well so that's why they are getting rid of the lineup

We bought the Time Machine mainly because of the backup capabilities, but we also use it as a 5GHz router and it's damn good. We get what we paid for (200-10).

Can't say I'm shocked. Their routers probably weren't selling all that well, and you can make Time Capsules out of seemingly any drive you plug in.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

so apple are killing off their good products and making more bad ones. Louis made an interesting discovery on the latest macbook pro in that you cant use wifi and usb at the same time.

 

Apple routers were good from what i heard and had some potential they never made use of. I think the marketing of other brands overshadowed apple in their router line and they focused on marketing their phones.

 

People just couldnt see a quality router when they saw one. Dlinks are horrible and so are many ISP given routers. Its less likely that people devote more of their money to networking when they can get something for free (from ISP) or for $15, use it and blame the wrong person when things go wrong.

 

I still disagree with smart TVs where the computer is merged with the display as it makes upgrading costly and issues impossible to deal with.

I wish they stuck to this because routers pretty much suck and Apple's one was actually good. This is one of the things that irritates me about Apple, how much time does it take to put newer hardware into a system they already have

Never used their routers but from what I've heard they're quite good. I actually hope this trend continues and Apple continues to cut products off their vast catalogue. Next up is the MBA

I just changed my old 2012 TimeCapsule to the last one, with ac wifi. Both are awesome, very easy to use. It's a shame Apple is ditching everything good they do to the crap they are releasing now.

No, they are shit, you just don't know better till you spend less on a ubiquiti (or other 3rd tier network brand) UAP. I had a Airport, turns out its a piece of shit.

There airport extreme was one great router. Shame they don't care about anything except the iPhone and flip books

Completely against. The router isn't sh#t like some Belkin routers and the design allows it to be placed nearly anywhere without being obvious like an Archer C7 or D-Link "gaming router/AP" that only looks good for an aircraft enthusiast.
