Yeah, no.  It doesn't work that way at all for tax brackets.  It is never disadvantageous to accept more income.  He's probably just ignorant and screwed himself out of money.

Well to be fair there's the very unlikely (but possible) case that the raise would have bumped his income up enough that he no longer qualified for a specific (and large) tax credit. It wouldn't affect his take-home income at all, but it would result in a lower tax refund, come tax season.

 

Though as I said, extremely unlikely for all of those specific pieces to line up to create such a scenario.
