HTC Vive has sold over 140,000 Units

As the article says, the vive has sold over 140,000 units which means it's actually doing pretty well considering how much of a "niche" market VR is considered to be at present. This is also the first real hard evidence we have ever gotten of how Desktop VR is doing. 

 

All I have to say is hopefully this trend continues and we will see cheaper, better VR in the coming years. I have tried a Vive at a friends house before and honestly it's quite an amazing experience, very different from traditional gaming. I just wish there was more games for it. But again, good to see its doing well so there is certainly a demand for games (though a small demand compared to other markets).

Jesus Christ. Early adopters have their VR it's up to them to influence other's to buy it, but WHAT HAPPENS? THE SALES DECREASE. The product life cycle of Vive VR is not doing well, and the marketing department better fix their shit before they end the product.

They said VR is dead because sales have stopped accelerating and almost came to a complete stop. Very different from saying no one bought it. Pretty much everyone who will get a VR headset has one already.

I don't understand why everyone finds it odd? I don't think it's dead btw. Problem is that the hype train steamrolled over the senseable people saying that it's all early steps and that those low price points won't be here for a long time. Don't expect the first gen to be cheap.

140k units is damn near nothing when you want to get devs to make games for it and all.

 

Really if VR was to be deemed a success this year you would need to be talking about millions of units (vive+Oculus) and you would need to see a ramp up next year even more.

 

The high costs of VR + the fact that so many people just can't use it due numerous issues is a problem to get the tech truly rolling in gaming. Personally if I could buy a unit I would, but I would take a week off to try it a lot to ensure I do not get any issues seeing I am prone to migraines for example and no game is worth those (also why I hate low fps in first person games)

 

What is going to be key is reducing the costs, making them easier to use requiring less space, but above all keep the demands down on hardware, allow the market to catch up a bit and in 2 years time if you have a 200 USD set then you can see some movement in the VR space. Until then it will just be to niece.

 

I just hope they do that and keep it alive, it is promising, just right now it is early adopter tech that will need to be handled very carefully for it not to go the way of the 3D.

This is misleading. The actual quote is "well over 140,000" - just no details on how far above 140K. Could be 165K as Steamspy suggests, could be 290K as Steam hardware survey suggests. Nobody really knows for sure.

To me VR is not interesting yet from what I've tried a bunch of things on it. I'll wait until it catches to a point that games look great and are not terrible to play for VR and also fun to keep you wanting to play.

I tried an Occulus rift when a friend brought one round to test on my computer (as it wouldn't work with their USB ports), it soft-bricked my spare computer, but I was able to try it for a little bit. The resolution was absolutely awful, all I could see was giant pixels with thumbprints in the inside between the screens and lenses from manufacturing. Overall the experience was terrible, and certainly didn't make me want to spend $1814.30 USD to get a Vive.

The HTC Vive costs $1045 US including shipping to New Zealand, if you order from vive.com. Dunno where you got that fake $1814.30 number from.

The Vive.com website a couple of months ago. They must have dropped the shipping cost since then, good to know. I hope that means the local stores will drop their prices as well, they are still $1999.

A lot of the problem is the content, or lack of. While there isn't content for VR, and when there is there will probably a better, less expensive, headset available, why buy now? Of course while people don't have VR Headsets it will discourage content creation.

 

Sony PS VR may drive games development, but may also feature PS exclusivity deals. Of course Valve could something, perhaps a third iteration of a popular franchise with a really good VR implementation to drive demand. I suspect VR will remain very niche for years, mostly for games that benefit from multi monitor setups like racing games and flight sims.

I don't know, but doubt it's higher then the Vive. The Vive offered a better overall VR experience until Oculus had his controllers ready + they have  a nice big player community because fo Steam.

 

Purely comparing the headsets the Rift seems the better one in a small margin, but most also wanted that freedom from the Vive. That beats the small margin for most.
