It is known. It tops out at 72 and iirc 1300 MHz. It's a 7TFlop chip.

I dont think you'd be able to fit more than 2 width-wise, and depending on crazyness you could squeeze two length wise as well.

You can fit 8 of these in a 1U. Dell already has a design for it. 4 CPUs and 4 accelerators. A 2U form factor can hold 20: 8 CPUs and 12 accelerators.

I'd imagine they're the price of a fairly nice car.

No, they'll top out at around the same price as the flagship E7 Xeons, or about $8000 a piece. That's a nice used car about 1 year old.

72 atom cores for the highest end one with 4 way hyperthreading for a total of 288 threads. The lowest end model has 68 cores iirc.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

so dual hyperthreding sortof? thats pretty freaking cool

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Power 8 does 8 threads per core. I'm pretty sure Oracle's Sparc M7 is either 4 or 8 threads per core as well. It's just SMT taken to greater and greater extremes.

Because Power and Sparc aren't used much outside of supercomputers and bank/financial institution mainframes. They're used sparingly and are partly security through obscurity. Also, IBM sells its Power 8 servers to the tune of about $2500 per CORE. 12 cores per socket max, though the flagship 12-core Power 8 can run at 4.7GHz in a 250W TDP. It's called a scale-up design. Without getting too technical, it has advantages for transactional workloads because it has fewer, faster cores.

Well Knights landing has 72 cores,  but they are atom cores.

I was just trying to explain why they couldn't just have a massive ground portion on one side of the CPU. The heatsink idea is possible but then there will be slight variations based on different heatsinks, it would also need contatct pins on the top and bottom of the cpu (at least internally).
