700 Tech support scammers arrested in Mumbai.

Today in Mumbai, 200 police officers raided 9 call centers and arrested more than 700 people who were scamming Americans, usually posing either as an officer from IRS or occasionally, from big tech firms like Microsoft, Google or Facebook. These call centers scammed nearly 6,500 Americans and collected over 36 million dollars.

In europe we don't have many issues with these guys, at least it looks like it's not nearly as much as americans...

They impersonated IRS officials... They impersonated cops and the threatened police force if the American didn't pay money. That is illegal.

Because in sensible places of the world companies still prefer to have call centers with locals, instead of listening to "bob from tek sappurt" that is obviously called rasjid. (Big shoutout to corsair here, and rasjid, if you're reading this, +1 to you bro :P)

They probably have an easier time finding people who speak english than people who speak other european languages, and a guy who calls you speaking english with an indian accent when you live in, say, germany is a extra suspicious.

Just thought about the fact we only have a handful of western unions in the country and moneygram isn't even here i think.

I guess that's also a reason :D

 

But yea we don't like to talk to a random tek sappurt guy, i think most of us just go to the local store to get things sorted out.

Not all, a big majority maybe but there are tons of places that still have call centers in the US. Where I live in Arizona is actually home to a huge number of call centers due to our weather. Most companies these days typically use overseas call centers as overflow or overnights.

I remember reading in the newspaper about these scammers claiming to be from Microsoft accidentaly calling the chief of Microsoft's departement in Norway. He was just playing along for a while to figure out more about what they were doing before revealing his position in the actual company :P

They were clearly following a script, and when he asked if they meant "control" when they said "the ctrl button" and if they meant "the Windows button" when they said "the button with the flag on it", they were unsure.
