this is a bit misleading as AM4 CPUs already have USB, SATA, PCIe, network PHY and other "connectivity" already embedded on chip - they're SoCs for god's sake

these chipsets will only add functionality

doesnt SoC imply that ram is on the main chip as well?

not necesarily

if you count the cache, it already has memory on-board ;)

not being very mature, are we?

look, all i'm saying is, there's a line here. intel has started with moving the north bridge into their CPUs, how much can you move into what is originally just a CU, ALU, and registers, before it is no longer a CPU and becomes a SoC?

So does that mean after Zen releases we will need to wait another 5 years to get all the technologies that release from now on like PCIe 4.0?

Or is the thing after Zen already being produced?

AMD's AM4 platform is a SoC no matter how you look it it (it doesn't have RAM on die)

all the connectivity (I mentioned in my 1st post) is embedded inside the AM4 package - everything! the board only acts as a connecting platform to the various peripherals

Surfing the web without adblock is just like having sex without a condom: you can't just establish a "trust" system you gotta look after yourself.

Likely but this wasn't always necessarily the case and we could see a change back: I remember when (of all people) Nvidia used to release their own chipsets for AMD CPUs which added more powerful integrated graphics and other features. I used to have one such rig way back when an Nforce 2 mobo.

But enough of my old man bullshit carry on.
