OpenOffice may shut down

Back in 2010 when Sun got acquired by Oracle, members of the OpenOffice.org community were concerned about Oracle's behaviour towards open source software, that concerned led to a fork that brought the Open Document Foundation and LibreOffice. Fast forward to today and seems like that may have been the best course of action, the project's vice-president, Dennis E. Hamilton, states: "it's retirement... is a serious possibility" due to a lack of developers as reported by Arstechnica.

The success of LibreOffice has dramatically affected the parent project to such a degree that, warns project VP Dennis E. Hamilton, “needing to disclose security vulnerabilities for which there is no mitigation in an update has become a serious issue.”

This is such a serious problem that the team behind OOo recommended it's users to either use Microsoft Office or LibreOffice back in July due to a security fix that was taking to long to be deployed.

I saw this coming miles away ever since i started focusing on open source stuff back when i was in high school, sa to see it happen tough. Where did you guys stood in 2010, do you think there's a brighter future ahead of OOo or is it finally the end of it's 14 year run?

Did the wait for the security implementation prevent other security patches from being issued? Because that might be a bigger issue than simply having one known security hole remain in the program, unless that security hole is quite large.

No great loss, Libre surpassed Open a long time ago. I see no reason for Open to exist anymore.

I forgot about OpenOffice. Libre is much better

i've actually used it once back when i used a linux pc, but now i just stick to the google drive suite. either that or i use the microsoft word provided by my school.

to be honest.. openoffice is like using word '97 where libreoffice is like using word 2013.

 

even google's drive suite has surpassed openoffice at some point, which was (together with 3 software crashes on one school day) my queue to find bigger and better things.

LibreOffice for the win. Used it all through ECPI, never had any issues with it.

 

Conversely, just installed Office 365 on my moms PC so my dad can use it for work stuff from home, and the computer now runs like shit, and is COMPLETELY fucking convinced that One Note is a printer, FUCKING REGARDLESS of how many times I set the default printer, to our actual printer.

Well i dont think that Open office was realy that relevent anymore tbh.

Most Linux distro's today ship with Libre office pretty much.

And next to that, there is also Kingsoft WPS office aswell.

I see no reason for Libre or Open office to still be used, as far as I know they have no cloud functionality at all. Google Drive/Docs/Slides/Sheets etc surpasses everything imo.

How did you kept using when they stopped adding features to it and security patches were becoming more rare? But give LibreOffice a go, if you somehow enjoyed OpenOffice till this point, Libre is much, much better

Most of the volunteer devs on OpenOffice decided to leave when Oracle took over. Since OpenOffice is open-source software, they just made a fork (copy), renamed it LibreOffice, and went on developing that.

 

LibreOffice pretty much is the real OpenOffice, they just don't own the name.

Used OpenOffice once for a short while on my android tablet, I was not really impressed. Went back to MS Office and have not looked back.

Normally I'm a fan of open source software but I was never impressed by OpenOffice. I always had problems with it. It was not working as it should, had compatibility issues and the user interface is not straight forward at all. So I think it's not too much of a pity if it's going down. I think there are enough alternatives to it.

Yeah I think I used open office once but didn't like it's simplistic old MS Word 2003 feel that I moved to WPS as a free alternative to ms Word. Maybe sometime I'll give libre a shot.
