Did you know that N64, PS1, Dreamcast, and the GameCube, PS2, XBox (original), could barely get you 30fps solid at the time.. no one was complaining. You has some of the best games on it as well. They weren't all on PC, and some of them still hold up today with its glorious 25fps action. Heck the SNES Starfox game barely ran 15fps. Was fine. Because it was consistent, so it didn't get you out of the experience.

 

And console can do 1080p 60fps. on every game. It is the game developers who decides (or more the publishers), "People want graphiXsss!!!! RealXsm!!! eXtreame!!!", and pushes content too much for the console. WiiU being the weakest console, has wonderful 60fps 1080p games. Not all, but the console is super weak. A bit better than last gen stuff. That is all. So no excuse for the PS4 and XBox One, really. So right now, if a console was 2000$ and had GTX 1080 inside and a Core i7 I don't know what model inside with 32GB of RAMs, games will still run at 30fps, because "We have to make it 8K, more realistic, more stuff happening on the screen!, more more more... EPIC!", 'cause that is what sales, sadly. I mean look at The Witcher 3... when the game came out, even if you had the fanciest computer, could not run 60fps solid at max settings at 1080p

 

The WiiU is a great point to what consoles should do but consumers what more and more. With older games I feel like FPS doesn't matter as much or maybe it was I was a kid so I remember them as amazing. Hahah. It was probably a combination of CRTs and the lesser graphics that made you not notice as much

Just keeping this here as a Console- Yearly internet fees, $60 AAA games $50 on sale. $40 for older ones. That adds up to

Oh? Free online? $20-$30 AAA games on launch from places like Kinguin, or on Steam Sales. Shadow of Mordor was $5 recently, Mad Max was $20 at launch, I got GTA V w/ a $20 shark card for $30. In the long rub, PC is cheaper.

Did you know that N64, PS1, Dreamcast, and the GameCube, PS2, XBox (original), could barely get you 30fps solid at the time.. no one was complaining. You has some of the best games on it as well. EPIC!", 'cause that is what sales, sadly. I mean look at The Witcher 3... when the game came out, even if you had the fanciest computer, could not run 60fps solid at max settings at 1080p

 

It's not that 25 or 15fps was/is "fine". It's what it ran at, whether you liked it or not. I'm sure the slide show bothered some people back in the day. But it was generally "accepted". Don't forget, those consoles were pushing the bleeding edge of gaming graphics in those days. Times have changed and standards have changed. 

 

1080p 60fps should be the minimum standard on game consoles today. Problem is this latest generation of consoles is not powerful enough to give the eye candy people expect at that frame rate. Thus, the compromise with dynamic resolutions depending on the graphical intensity of the scene, various AA filters and motion blurring effects as well as locking the frame rate at a much more achievable 30fps. It is what it is and for many, it's unacceptable because by today's standards, it is sub-par. Just because some people are "ok" with it does not mean everyone "should be" ok with it. 

 

The capability of PC gaming hardware has FAR exceeded what consoles can do. It has raised the bar of what is acceptable for many. And no, I'm not talking about the $2000+ SLI monster gaming rigs. I'm talking about $800-$1500 rigs. That brings me to the other problem which you mentioned here and I agree with. In order to have the eye candy + the frame rates, the consoles would cost too much to be mass-produced and be obtainable to the masses. 

 

To be honest, in terms of visual fidelity, I am impressed by how good games look on the current gen consoles. They look great. However, for me and for many, 30fps is unacceptable. 

 

Good games stand on their own merits, graphics and frame rates aside (Dark Souls 1, for example. lol). It's interesting you mentioned the WiiU and games at 1080/60fps because it actually has more games that run at 1080/60 than the PS4 and Xbox One. Yes, the games are far less demanding and graphically intense, but they are arguably no less "fun" to play, depending on who you ask. 

 

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said they are trying to pair too much graphical detail with hardware that arguably cannot handle it. ;)

WiiU has no yearly fee for Internet.

The other charges you, because: 1) they can, and 2) people are fine buying them, much like day 1 DLC, and such, hence why we have them.

 

Console game do come down in prices, and you do have specials on the online store of the console. The only games that don't drop in prices are Nintendo own games, but then again similar story for Blizzard games. they drop until much later in time than other games, and the more successful the game is, the longer it remains at that high price.

 

And again, that is parts of the up and downs of a console... that is up you. As mentioned, you do have a nice set of downsides on PC as well, which you may or may not care about.

 

And again, you can get a console or your choice, be that it is Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft, and a PC at the same time.

my issue with the "Xbone and PeasantStation" as we jokefully call them is they're nothing more than a locked down PC.

- the xbox one basicly runs windows under the hood

- the PS4 at least still runs a custom OS (although, cant say *how* custom)

- both of them are basicly PC hardware: 8-core x86 cpu, AMD graphics solution, hard drive, bells, and whistles.

- generation by generation consoles got more complex, less reliable, and got more of the same issues as PC has.

 

your console will now need OS updates, game updates, new releases probably are bug-ridden and wether you buy boxed or not you'll need to download updates trough the horrendously slow wifi connection (someone please tell me they both have ethernet)

 

i like my pc because i have options, customizability, i can tinker, toy around with the backend and so on.

 

i like my PS1 because i can plug it into a projector, press the power button, and play my game without needing to worry about anything but the temperature of the projector bulb behind me. unfortunately, that is a far gone past, and modern day consoles (and even PS3...) just simply do not appeal to me. everything they can do for me is also something i can do with an old pc i have on a shelf.

 

it also seems that all the console exclusives i never found a fitting replacement for on PC have disappeared in the folds of time as well. i'd buy a PS5 if it had an updated crash team racing / nitro kart, and ran off the disk without needing updates every other week.

 

a pc is a device you set up and configure, and stays in that state, a console is a device you can plop down, plug in, and it works regardless of where it's plopped down, or what it's plugged into.

So then people need to stop going "I WANT GRAPHIX"... and maybe the industry will change. Or accept that console, most games, are 30fps solid.

Ok, but why? Why not 4K 120Hz? That should be standard in my book. I want people to get the best possible experience to be amazed. And that is my minimum.

Much like many people here are pretty much "Get an SSD with your PC, or don't buy a computer at all", and I agree... SSD is the minimum, because it greatly improves the experience, like one might say for 4K 120Hz.

 

And when you "some" people, you really mean "most" people. Because if that was the case, than we would be getting articles about the death of the console, and the WiiU selling like hot cakes. But that is not what is happening.

800$ is a tad more than ~250-300$ :) And for what? Another PC just to play games in the living room... 800$ to play games in the living room. And again, now you'll fight with game settings. Not to mention you need to build it, and not everyone can.

My sister-in-law has an Xbox one. There is a growing list of games she would like to buy and play but cannot afford, even some that are over a year old. Meanwhile I can get the same games for half price or less at almost any time. 

 

She is the type of person who does not care to have the highest graphics settings or frame rates, so she would have been better off going with a budget gaming PC (which she could upgrade over time) and be able to afford more games to enjoy. ;) Her boyfriend bought her the xbox so there was little choice there. She already has a gaming platform and cannot afford another. Regardless, she enjoys it just the same and is a competitionist, so she plays fewer games but puts more time into them, individually. So it works out fine anyways.

 

It is situation dependent and I believe for many people, PC gaming is the cheaper and better route, they just don't necessarily realize it.

Ok, but why? Why not 4K 120Hz? That should be standard in my book. I want people to get the best possible experience to be amazed. And that is my minimum.

Much like many people here are pretty much "Get an SSD with your PC, or don't buy a computer at all", and I agree... SSD is the minimum, because it greatly improves the experience, like one might say for 4K 120Hz.

 

And when you "some" people, you really mean "most" people. Because if that was the case, than we would be getting articles about the death of the console, and the WiiU selling like hot cakes. But that is not what is happening.

 

800$ is a tad more than ~250-300$ :) And for what? Another PC just to play games in the living room... 800$ to play games in the living room. And again, now you'll fight with game settings. Not to mention you need to build it, and not everyone can.

 

 

To your first point about graphics; Look at the earliest console with the "pong" game. Compare that to the first 3d video games. People's minds were blown. Now compare the first 3d games to modern graphics. Some scenes and in-game footage in some of the latest titles is becoming harder to tell if it's real or fake. Gamer's mind's have been blown time and time again over the last two decades. Now graphics have somewhat plateaued, to an extend. Some games that are 4-5 years old, with a few minor mods still look incredible (Skyrim). It's just what people have come to accept as the standard and it's become increasingly more difficult to push graphics beyond what they're at now. Sure it can be done, but we all know the kind of hardware required to do so. 

 

The current gen consoles have a big problem and part of that problem is marketing. They can't build anything substantially powerful without it being overly expensive. Yet they market the games by saying "look at these graphics!" and try to compare to PC (which they can, to extent). But again the issue then lies in the only way they can compromise - by dropping the frame rate to 30. Moving forward it's only going to become more problematic. PC has moved on to 1440p and now 4k is even becoming more common. Meanwhile, the consoles are still dabbling at sub-1080 and 30fps.

 

To your second point about the standard; I would love for the standard to be 4k and 120hz, as would many others. One day, that probably will be, but the hardware and cost of such devices/components is well beyond the reach of the masses. A 1080p 60hz budget gaming build is very well attainable by the majority these days and playing games at that resolution and frame rate looks very good. 

 

As for "some people" vs "most people", I believe if given the opportunity to see and experience the difference between 30 and 60fps, the majority would prefer 60. Going back to console gaming, I think many people accept the 30fps because of various reasons; They don't have a choice (parent's or someone bought them the console), they simply don't know any better (have always owned/gamed on console), or don't care (just play the games to enjoy them, graphics and frame rates aside), etc. 

 

To your third point about the cost; I was simply pointing out that you need not spend an arm and a leg for a PC that can blow the consoles out of the water in terms of performance. That being said, more and more gamers who have and use a PC for gaming, are able to see and experience gaming at higher resolutions, frame rates and graphical details. This raises the bar of expectations and thus a console that can only run games at sub 1080 and mostly 30fps seems outdated and "below standard".

Austin Evans did a $350 PC that beats the consoles (which is around the same price) It had an 860k and a R7 360.  


Hell, using used parts, one could probably build something even better.  It comes down to this.  Consoles, for the most part, are just plug and play.  You (include install for this gen) put in the disk or cartridge, you may or may not have an update, then you play the game.


PC gaming has come a long way and it mostly like this.  But there were a couple games I had to fiddle with the settings and couldn't just start up.  (And one horribly optimized game) Homefront the Revolution, Overwatch (I had to put it on medium high for my laptop) and Just Cause 3.  

 

Granted, even at 1080p low to medium, the PC port will almost always look better and run better than it's console variants. 

 

Then after upfront hardware costs, due to Steam, Origin, and Uplay sales, you can a lot of times get AAA titles for cheap.  Consoles, a lot of the times games stay around the $60 to $40 range, and you usually have to wait at least a couple years for used games to be a viable means of arguing cheap games.

 

In the end though, it just depends on what you like to game on really.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

PC Pros: Cheap, More games, better hardware, better games, its fun to build, bigger better setups, versatility to use for more than games.

Console Pros: consoles have a fluid game and social experience, exclusives, larger player base, can be cheap, 

PC Cons: Can be expensive, more learning

Console Cons: Need to buy a new console for each generation of game

A lot is wrong. especially that console Con. I've had my xbox 360 and have played my 360 for 10 years only recently getting the xbox one. I've had countless hours of fun with friends and family on it and the fact that it has lasted so long is quite amazing. PCs dont exactly have that life expectancy, they don't have developers creating optimizations for that exact hardware. 

 

PCs and consoles are starting (it seems like) to combine player bases so that fact might not be so true in the future.

 

A lot of the pc pros are opinionated it seems and cant be used as points except for "Cheap[can be], more games, . . . Versatility" 

 

Consoles don't always have fluid game, ever tried to go into a big city in Fallout 4 with Xbox one? You get lag spikes, not so much that you just want to quit but maybe once every half hour ish.

thing is, the optimized titles allow for quite a few higher settings. Now the main gripe of consoles, has been and probably will be for the overseeable future, the lack of long render distances. This is where PC shines.

 

However as @GoodBytes said, you are not really guaranteed to have a better experience on PC...

Personally, i buy a playstation for exclusives, and i got a gaming PC that costs nearly 15x that of the PS4... The hardware i got is FAR more powerful, but the gaming experience isnt neccessarily better in every single way. Sure higher resolution is nice, higher framerates are nice, but in the end, that is but eyecandy, and does nothing for the game itself.

 

Some games ought to be played on PC, they simply NEED to be played on PC for the visuals AND the gameplay. But others, it doesnt matter. It really does not matter.

Project Cars isnt going to be a better game because it looks better on PC. Same with street fighter, Dark Souls, and many more.

PC also has yearly internet fees... PCs doesnt come with "magic free broadband"...

If you are thinking of leeching off your neighbors WIFI, then consoles can do taht too BTW

if both were pc gamers it requires one to bring their rig to another's house or to take it in turns while the other sits there aimlessly slipping into madness.

 

until PC can give me on the fly split screen then console will always win regardless of specs.

 

I know there are a few games that support it like dungeon defender's and I know mine craft can with a bit of moding.

You know, as a person that hasn't touched a new-ish console (ps2 is the latest one i ever properly used) i was very very disappointing by the poor support since xbox 360/ps3.

With the PS2 almost every game had multiplayer, great! But damn went it downhill hard since then. Xbox 360 local multiplayer became rare and a lot of games only supported online multiplayer or another form that required 2 physical consoles.

 

So for pc games yes it usually requires your friend to bring over his rig, but with most console games today your friend needs to bring his console sooo yea... It's almost the same thing.

 

I still use my PS2 btw, for the simple reason that nothing out there matches the local multiplayer support for it.

If a friend comes over, that's where we usually end up on, playing together some old-school badass games on the PS2.

And it's not my pc isn't capable of local multiplayer, i have 3 xbox 360 controllers (and i don't have an xbox 360, go figure :p) all connected to my pc and the bunch of batteries required to keep everything properly going. The system itself is also capable of playing most games in a nice way.
