Upgraded my Ram. Broke my PC

Hi All,

Currently, I am using a:
Asrock PG Velocita x570

Ryzen 9 5900x

GSkill Ripjaw 4x8gb ddr4 3200mhz

Nvidia RTX 4070

EVGA 650w supernova

2x ssd's i can't remember the names of

1x2tb 2.5in hdd

I decided to "upgrade" my RAM to Corsair Vengeance 2x16 ddr4 3600mhz. I shut down my PC, removed the old RAM, and then put in the new RAM in slots 2 and 4. I turned on my PC, and everything turned on fine. I get into Windows and notice that it's still running at 3200mhz. I decided to go into the BIOS and adjust that to 3600 because that is what I bought the RAM for. I go into the bios, set the preset to the 3600, and then restart the device, and nothing happens. It gets stuck. I can see from the bios code that it gets stuck on something (I forget what because I have been troubleshooting for a while now). I started my troubleshooting by removing both sticks and putting 2 sticks of the Ripjaws back in the same slots because those had been known to be working 15 minutes earlier. The same thing happens. I then try clearing the CMOS by removing the battery but that also does not work. I try the bios flashback button (without a bios USB in because I am stupid) and it flashes for a couple of moments and then goes solid red. I then download the correct BIOS version on my mac and put it on a flash drive and then push the bios flashback button and it does the same thing. I then attempt to put in a single stick of RAM, and in slot 4, it shows code 24 on boot. I checked online and it says either the slot is dead or the memory controller on the CPU is dead. I check slot 2 and get code f2. This one says its a bios issue.

So now I think I have 3 issues because I am really stupid and can't accept that my RAM is running at 3200mhz.

1) I am unsure how to flash the bios from bios flashback because all the instructions to put the file on a USB are for Windows, and my Mac doesn't seem to extract the files from the .zip correctly.

2) I think my might have killed my CPU but have no way to test that.

3) I might have killed the bran new sticks of ram because they pull code 22 when plugged in says its initizizing but was stuck on that for like 15min.

If anyone can help me that would be great.

Michael

If you post the Windows instructions, I can try to "convert them" to Mac instructions for easier understanding - I've been using both macOS and Windows for a while

I love making PCPartPicker lists.

I am basically following this

https://www.asrock.com/support/QA/FlashbackSOP.pdf

but when I extract the files, I go from

X570 PG Velocita(5.60)ROM.zip

to

X570PGV5.60

Everything I look at says theres supposed to be multiple files in there. not just the one.

Downloaded it, just 1 file in zip, normal for BIOS downloads.

Please tell me you don't use your PC primarily for gaming.

400 MHz memory speed difference won't show up in gaming performance...

I do... look I know I probably broke my computer for absolutely no gain. I am not smart...

If it is only one file, all I need to do is move the file over to my USB, plug it into the port, and push the bios flashback button, right? I try doing that and then the light will flash for a few seconds and then go solid red.

the only information I can find on this is for an MSI motherboard

https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threads/b550-gaming-edge-wifi-flash-bios-led-permanent-solid-red.363709/

this says its failed and needs to be tried again. idk why its failing though.

Generally when you do a bios flashback, you do it without CPU or RAM installed. Did you take these out of the board?

Just a quickie response to stop you from making things worse 🙂

If you have trouble with a simple memory upgrade and/or BIOS flash

you really shouldn't start disassembling core components of your PC.

I think I am already at worse tbh. I have a strong feeling that I broke my CPU but i won't know until I can get the bios working again. Am i not supposed to flash the bios without the cpu installed?

That BIOS file is a bit unusual, did you read the flash instructions at asrock?

Usually those files end in .rom

but it might vary, so read the instructions.

thats what I thought but its what I downloaded from https://pg.asrock.com/mb/AMD/X570 PG Velocita/index.asp#BIOS

I selected the 5.60 version and chose the global download

On another note i find it hard to believe that you should have killed

2 sets of memory.

Linus tried killing memory on purpose once, and failed.

Favorite LTT video of mine...he gets zapped and zapped and zapped...

Good times...not for Linus though 🙂

Maybe the memory just isn't seated right.

The youtube "experts" keep saying it might need more force than you are willing

to apply.

Try 2 of your old sticks. Slot A2 and B2, 2nd and 4th slot counting from CPU side.

Is this it try and update the bios? because when I plugged in a single old stick into A2 it gave the code F2 which meant a bios issue. That makes sense because I originally thought that the bios flashback would work to role back to the previous working bios, so it wouldn't need a USB drive to work.

as a side note you would think I know how to fix computers considering I work in IT and yet here we are.

BTW google says BIOS flashback works fine with CPU installed.

I put in 2 of the old sticks into A2 and B2 and then did the bios flashback again and it once again blinked 3-4 times and then went solid red. its currently still sitting on solid red.

BTW I'm an  MSI user and in my case BIOS flashback files MUST be called msi.rom

So do read up on that.

According to the instant flash instructions for asrock https://www.asrock.com/support/BIOSIG.asp?cat=BIOS10

it should be what I already have

according to the bios flashback instrcutions https://www.asrock.com/support/QA/FlashbackSOP.pdf

it should be named CREATIVE.ROM

so idk which to do.

tbh I have tried both now

we might be getting somewhere. I realized when I had tried the creative.rom file name I had been using the beta bios file at the top of the page. using the stable version under it which is what I have been trying so far and then renaming that to creative.rom causes the bios flash back to I think work as intended. its blinking now and not going solid red

Well for the first set of instructions you need BIOS access.

Second is for flashback.

Also try another USB drive (FAT 32, no bigger than 32 GB).

it just went off. which according to the website is what its supposed to do. so now I need to plug my GPU back in and see if I can get video out with the old ram
