MS cuts 2850 more jobs from it's mobile division

In a move that will shock no one in this point in time, MS will be laying off 2850 more employees from it's mobile division. It as been a terrible ride for MS's mobile division ever since the acquisition of Nokia's devices and services business back in 2013 for 5,4 billion €. Since then 18000 ex nokia employs have lost their job in the following year, in 2015 7800 more had to leave, earlier this year MS's had to sell the feature phone business for 242 Million $ and in the following weeks lay off 1850 people. No words from MS's on which region will be hit this time (last time the majority of the 1850 were from Finland).

In a US regulatory filling MS said:

In the fourth quarter of 2016, management approved restructuring plans that would result in job eliminations, primarily across our smartphone hardware business and global sales. In addition to the elimination of 1,850 positions that were announced in May 2016, approximately 2,850 roles globally will be reduced during the year as an extension of the earlier plan, and these actions are expected to be completed by the end of fiscal year 2017.

In connection with the restructuring plans, we incurred restructuring charges of $501 million in fiscal year 2016, including severance expenses and other reorganisation costs. We do not expect to incur additional charges for these restructuring plans in subsequent years.

The Nokia acquisition by MS as proven to be one of the worst purchases in the history of the company, i just wished the team behind Cortana would be the one to get the axe instead of the ex Nokia employees.

All big cooperation had been doing that for a while. The head of the competition, CEOs and those people in the high places get a big pie ,cash in and go home. All the little guys got knocked off. Do you remember in the godfather part 2 Frank pentangeli and Tom Hegan's conversation?

Normally I would scorn M$ for this, but...

 

The bastards deserve it. I fucking hate my Windows Phone. Nothing is compatible, it freezes constantly, the music playback is shit (a song might play well one time, and then have issues like cracking or skipping the next time, despite being saved to the phone).

 

Windows just needs to realize that they have no clue what they are doing when it comes to making a phone.

In the past there was some talking about they promising not to do that, but come on Finland authorities fucking knew if they didn't get that on writing this was going to happen, it was just a PR to say "Noooo no we totally won't cut the employees off!"

Why cant MS just hire some competent people and pay Linus or some other massively popular reviewer to make for good QUALITY CONTROL/features management? Wtf, they had the money, how could you ever make a bad product, just do some damn focus groups smh.

Judging by Windows 8 and 10 I'd say they don't know how to make desktop software either. It's just that they have gotten so big they can't fail anymore (on the desktop).

Reviewing and designing are two very different things. Think of it like music. Just because you can tell that you like a song or not, doesn't mean you can write that kind of music.

They are continuing to make phones and operating systems designed for Phones.

Not really. I'd say they have and are trying to make an operating system differently to how it used to be made.

 

They seem to be targeting a different demographics. Because of this, the same users might not like their new OS.

I have an HTC One M8, which is a decent phone, but the Windows OS just fucking sucks.

 

I can't get Chrome, I can't get FireFox, I can't play flash video (can't install flash either), and I can't play FLAC audio files.

 

Oh, and Internet Explorer LOVES to load half of a page. I mean vertically. So, a news article, I will get only the left half of the article.

 

And it won't let me resize. Doesn't always happen, but it's not uncommon either.

2-3 years ago that was the case for me

then out of nowhere my accent wasnt a problem

I dont use it on my computer for obvious reasons but on my phone its handy if my hands are dirty or im carrying something

It would be awesome if you could install custom Android at some point... but that probably won't happen ever. 
Also... why did you buy the Windows version?

Because I like the interface on the main part of the phone better than android. The live tiles are nice if you have giant sausage fingers like mine.

 

I also like the security. No one hacks Windows Phones because fucking no one uses Windows Phones lol

 

But, I'm going android next time. Windows just doesn't have the compatibility for stuff. Mainly music, although that's not going to be as much of an issue when I get my DAP to go along with my Sennheiser Momentums (which should be here monday.....SOON)

Their latest phone is an overpriced Snapdragon 212 device released in February of this year. They don't seem really focused on making new phones and gaining marketshare.

They do. They want to make high end phones from now on. They want to leave midrange and low end devices to OEMs.

 

Remember Windows on devices under 8 inches (Including Windows Tablets) is free! So they want to make the barrier to making a Windows Phone as low as possible so that any OEM can make a Windows Phone.

They want to do the same as they are for PC. They want to lead by example. They want to make the Surface Phone which will be high end and let the other OEMs make all the other devices. Because they realized that they can't do it alone. The brand recognition is kinda mediocre at best for Microsoft. Especially for Windows Phones with Lumias and whatnot. They want it to be more approachable to people and it seems to be working since many OEMs have experimented with making a Windows Phone.

 

Acer, Alcatel OneTouch, HP and Lenovo are already jumping onboard with this idea and are happy to have Windows on more devices. Even if it was a once sparse platform. It is growing far and wide. Sure, not all  the games and apps are there but they are coming.
