Overall I'm slightly disappointed. I was really, really hoping to see a single GPU 2160p60 Ultra solution and it isn't here yet.

But, it does put Pascal in a good position for the GTX 1080 Ti to finally get there. Silver linings and all that.

Not necessarily. The new cooler incorporates a vapour chamber as well. It may not require ludicrous fan speeds for reasonable temps.

It really was, and it tricked every tech person there from the media. Especially after they said it was just a random GPU picked from a crate.

Honestly, I'm not too impressed with Pascal yet. Will have to see what GP100 brings.

I think anyone who was expecting the 1080 to be a 4k ultra 60fps+ card had their expectations set too high. 4k gaming is extremely demanding.

It is, however, a very viable single GPU 4k gaming solution, none-the-less. 60fps is easily achieved on high settings in many games.

The temps to sound is very similar to that of my current 980Ti.

The 1080 runs on average stock underload at 82 degrees, the 980Ti at 83 degrees.

dB the 1080 is 48 vs 52 of the 980Ti.

I have a feeling it's a slightly revamped 980Ti cooler, although considering this is 180w vs 250w cards the 1080 is not impressing me at all with it's temps.

Except we need to know what the fan speed is at. The fan on the 1080 is probably running at a much lower rpm vs the 980Ti.

Well, if you consider that this is just the small version of the chip (or mid-sized i should say) @ 300mm² it's beating a freaking TitanX at half the size, power consumption and heat output...it's also cheaper, has GDDR5X memory...i think it's pretty impressive and it can just get me to dream about the full size pascal chip how powerful that will be: it's goona be insane...this one will do 4K gaming comfortably.

Anyways, also the thing they added for rendering multiple viewports it's amazingly nice for ultra-wide gaming and tripple monitor gaming...and for VR as well...people talk like ''it's 2X the performance only in VR'' like if this is garbage...it's a SUPER good news because in a year or two from now you will see VR kits at 400USD that will be readily available and people will be super happy that Pascal had those features implemented...anyways, it's all good stuff, i'm not gonna buy one because i already have a good overclocked GTX 980ti and the performance increase is not enough to justify the cost and work of the swap for me personally but i would seriously consider it if i had anything bellow a GTX 980.

Possibly, but how much slower? Very little I'd say considering the difference in dB between the two cards.

My 980Ti is a Superclocked one from EVGA using the reference cooler, and I stay at a max of 83 degrees at 2204rpm without dropping the boost clocks.

Even if the 1080 runs at 2100rpm it's not going to make much difference, although one thing of interest to note from Anandtech is " NVIDIA’s temperature management technology has not changed relative to Maxwell, so like their other cards, the GTX 1080 tops out in the low 80s for load temperature"

As it stands though, I feel a tad underwhelmed by the 1080 in performance and temps/noise. Especially considering the extra $50 markup over the 980's launch price.

970 launched at $350. Just like the 570 did. In the U.S. the 970 (non b-stock) can be found for about $300 on the dot. Same as the 570 nearing the end of its life.

There were lots of 970s at $330 on launch date, they all just sold out insanely quickly. Though the $350 one sold out quickly too.

That really is, I also noticed at Hardware Canucks he mentioned the card actually throttles. This is because the fan doesn't seem to ramp up until it starts to throttle. That's not good, it means the fan is suddenly going to get really loud.

So a custom fan curve is likely needed.

You're probably right in that my expectations were set too high. Like I said, it bodes really well for the GTX 1080 Ti though. It'll be interesting to see just how high the AIB partners take their factory overclocks too; that could really tip the balance into some amazing 4K performance.

Good stuff. Looks like at stock it's already slightly faster than an overclocked 980ti.

So with an overclock it should pull ahead quite significantly.

It's a 180W card, with a new improved Vapor Chamber cooler, and NVIDIA claimed they were able to hit 2GHz at load running at 67 degrees at their launch event.

Now it turns out, the card caps at 82 degrees, then throttles the boost clock down.

The 980 didn't even have a vapor chamber and didn't throttle.

Hell my 980Ti EVGA Superclocked card with reference cooler doesn't throttle under fullload for hours of rendering or gaming.

So to sum it up, "improved" vapor chamber cooler, which can't even keep a reference 180w card under 80 degrees on a double node shrink.

While the same/older cooler can manage it on a 250W card like the 980Ti.

All in all, it seems the aftermarket cards are the ones to get. A shame though.

Though people went nuts for that ugly reference cooler on the 970 when Best Buy got it even though it made the card cost $410 after tax when you could buy them online without tax for $330.

What I want is a blower cooler that keeps temps under 75*C but the last such thing was the 670/7950 reference

Love how the AMD defense force is at work here, trying to make these results seem bad.

It is on average 30% faster than a Titan X. About 70% faster than a 980 for 4K (seems to be 50-60% for 1080p).

Very good overclocking headroom.

Nice temps.

Quiet cooler.

Lots of new, exciting features.

The cards with custom coolers will be more interesting though.

Just set a custom fan curve if you want that. That way you can prioritize temperatures or sound to whichever degree you want.
