Can't disagree, their benchmarks have been less than stellar since their office move.

Certainly didn't live up to the hype. This card would have been far more impressive had it released at the same price point as the gtx 980 which it is replacing. This suggests that there is not going to be a 1080ti, NVIDIA are charging more for their cards now or perhaps they're just overpricing it until vega or gp100 launches.

I guess only time/drivers will tell.

The 980 was not too much an improvement over the 780ti and saw price drop at release compared to the previous generation, where the gtx780 released at $650 and the 980 at $550.

While the 1080 Founders edition seems a bit like an early adopter tax, the release msrp of $600 for the standard (?) version doesn't seem too wild to me.

I think most people were expecting a little more from a double node shrink and architectural improvement. Also there is no guarantee that we will see prices below $699. I don't expect them to fall below $650 at the very least.

What architectural improvement?

This is more like Ivy Bridge was back in '12. Just the node shrink and a couple features.

Warmer than I'd prefer. 85*C is the max safe temp after all.

Nvidia targets 83C for all their cards for the past few generations. It's no surprise nor is it bad that it remains the same. The 980 has a max safe temperature of 98C, the 1080 should be similar. http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-980/specifications

But Jen Hsun himself said that it would run 2.1GHZ at 69c. How can that be? Did... did NVidia LIE? :o

Tomshardware tried to replicate this and the only way they did it was to run the fan at 100% and cover it up using loud EDM at the press conference. Considering that the cooler capability probably isn't much higher than the tdp of the card and AIB custom coolers generally have a higher tdp, the overclock should be attainable on all third party cooled cards, provided they don't make an itx version.

3 hours ago, don_svetlio said:

Indeed. Temps on the new cooler seem just as bad as the old one. Definitely underwhelming when paying 700$....

If you look at just price to performance, the 1080, even the founder's edition is worth every penny. Another thing, like LMG has pointed out, the main reason to get a blower design card is for small form factor computers which are getting increasingly popular. The limited airflow and designs that are generally intended for blower design cards (i.e. grilled holes on the side panel where the blower is) make it an obvious choice.

98*C? Then why do Nvidia throttle the card at 85*C? Maxwell doesn't tolerate heal as well as Kepler or GCN.

Then get a blower 970 from MSI or EVGA - it will cost less than half concurrently and perform good enough to run all games at Ultra 1080p. 1080 is not good value.

Because that's how gpu boost works. You pick a temperature target or a power limit target and it'll keep boosting until it hits it; It defaults to the temperature target.

I have a 970 and it cannot run every game at ultra detail at 1080p, it can only do very high at best. However, I do prefer 60fps minimum.

Edit: I wish AMD and nVidia would go back to the 5870 and 7970 release days where they release their flagship cards now and not "x60 class cards (according to Linus on the recent WAN show).

Remember operating temperature depends on ambient temperature almost exactly - 1 degree less ambient temperature will result in 1 degree less GPU temperature, give or take a few small fractions.

So maybe Dimitry's ambient temp was super cold :P

Even on other review sites like Anand, PcPer, Linus and more it all ran at 82* on average at stock speeds.

The 1080 also has the GP104 chip with the smaller die, and it's still seeing ~30% performance improvement over the 980ti.

I still don't think the msrp of the 1080 is bad, but I do want to wait for what the consumer release of the GP100 chip can provide.

How is the 1080 not good value at $600 (which you will be able to find it at aftermarket) At $700 I would 100% agree, but there were plenty of $330-$350 970's day one, that did NOT sell out on day 1.

Only available for 700$ initially so am judging that

Ah I didn't watch the entire video. He does mention throttling at 82 degrees with clock speeds hoving around 1800MHz. That just means with a decent after market cooler or better yet on water the 1080 is an absolute beast.

You're forgetting that NV have upped the price by $50 again, $150 if you buy reference( prefer it or want to watercool ).

I personally don't see it as too great mostly because of that as well.

Which is disappointing after NVIDIA demo'd it at 67* at 2Ghz.
Especially since this is a 180W card with a Vapor Chamber cooler like the 980Ti/Titan X; both of which are 250W cards that could easily pull 300W+ during boosting.

Anyone who is saying these benchmarks are disappointing is off their rocker.

Obviously nVidia's marketing team is going to try and create as much hype as possible, but if you ignore everything nVidia said and focus on what the card actually is, it's super impressive.

For the past... forever... GPUs have generally outperformed their previous iteration by around 15-20%. This GP104 card comes out, and not only does it outperform the GM204 by over 60%, but it also outperforms the full GM200 by 20-30%, and people are calling it a disappointment?

I don't know what people were expecting, but if they were expecting more than that they're definitely on something that's not good for them.

GTX980 was $549 MSRP
GTX 1080 is $699 Founders and $599 AIB. That's an increase is it not?

It's going to be even worse for folks outside of the US :(

Unbearable mean unuseable. At 55% Fan speed the 1080 is already at ~2200RPM, it's completely unusable if you ran it at 100% if the PC is even 2 rooms away from you.

Even then the card is already reported to throttle on the cooler. Once again a 180W card throttling  on a Vapor Chamber cooler that can handle a 250W card.

My main issues with the card is price and thermals/dB. Plus I was kinda expecting more performance for a double die shrink.

Possibly the 1080Ti is the one to really look forward to.
