Anyway there's little reason to upgrade if you have a 970. I too have an R9 290 vapor-x, and as great as the GTX 1080 is when I actually play games on my GPU at silky smooth framerates with great image quality I realize there is no need to upgrade for now.

I think for us the only reason would be if we get a 4K monitor. And in that case I think it makes sense to wait for the flagship parts.

It was in jest, not mocking.

Curious because GTX 970 has good perf / watt and most owners are happy with that aspect of it.

 

Anyway back to Tenelia's concerns in addition to the Pascal architectural improvements and new manufacturing process, the flagship parts should also come with HBM 2. So that will give a further boost to perf/watt. We could see the big parts be even more efficient than this.

As I suspected, 25-30% increase. Definitely not "irresponsible amounts of performance"

 

As I also suspected, the temperature we saw that overclock in was with the blower fan running at 100% speed with noise rivaling that of a vacuum cleaner. In fact according to tomshardware leaving the stock fan profile leads to the card reaching its 84 degree temperature target and clock itself down to base clockspeed.

 

As if the "refounderence" card needed any more shit to be talked about it. Waiting for AIBs is recommended for any and everyone.

lol who is everyone? Everyone knows the double performance only applies to VR only, it was written on the slides. Only fanboys tricked themself into thinking 2x performance in real games.

I won't get it though. Too expensive. I will probably get the 380X replacement from AMD. For the next months it seems like Nvidia will dominate the high end, while AMD will be the mid-range.

Hopefully this puts pressure on AMD to release Polaris 10 around $250-$270 with GTX 980 level performance as the R9 480x. That would be a really hot card for then. If it's 970 performance for $300 that would kind of stink, considering I can already buy a new 970 from newegg for $256.

Remember operating temperature depends on ambient temperature almost exactly - 1 degree less ambient temperature will result in 1 degree less GPU temperature, give or take a few small fractions.

 

So maybe Dimitry's ambient temp was super cold

Certainly didn't live up to the hype. This card would have been far more impressive had it released at the same price point as the gtx 980 which it is replacing. This suggests that there is not going to be a 1080ti, NVIDIA are charging more for their cards now or perhaps they're just overpricing it until vega or gp100 launches.

 

I guess only time/drivers will tell.

Well I hear Canada is a pretty cold place  . He also had his fan speed set to 55% maximum. What a card.

I wouldn't believe that kind of temperature on 55%. Every other reviewer had to turn the fan to 100% to achieve sub-70 temperatures.

I want to see a comparison between a 1080 and 980ti that are roughly at the same clock speed. Would be interesting to see how much the clock speed is affecting the performance gain. @Slick

Nah I agree. LTT's quality content is stuff like SYW and "turn you dead hard drive into a magnetic parts tray". DF didn't benchmark GTA V though
