It shot up 50% after they received a $300 million contract from China, and it's already lost 20% of that 50% increase after one day. The stock will continue to drop over the next few weeks until it's not that far away from the $2.60~ it's been sitting at for the past year or so. But That increase doesn't mean the company isn't literally bleeding money at this point.

If the card is actually faster than a 980ti. And they sell it for 300, it'll cannibalize sales on their other cards. So theyll loose money, considering a fury x might be equal or bettr than a 980ti. Except that has happened the past 2 generations. 7970 and 680 became $300 GPUs. 390 and 970 gave 290x and 780 ti performance for $300

That's massive. They have 793.49 million shares, so as of Thursday 21st April they were valued at $2.11b, as of today $2.74b. Only a $626.86m difference in value.

Which is not exactly that difficult, the 980Ti is nothing if not cost ineffective. It's an enthusiast card, carrying an enthusiast price. The Polaris 10 chip is placing itself in the ''mainstream'' segment, were price to performance is more important than sheer performance alone. The consumer willing to pay 750USD for a graphics card, is likely willing to pay another 250USD for 10% more performance. While the consumer paying 300USD for a GPU, is not gonna pay another 100USD for 10% more performance.

 

Just compare the amount of 970/390 owners, compared to the amount of 980/390x/fury owners. The 300USD price point is THE sweet spot for the average budget.

For the same reason Nvidia did with the GTX 970: because they had really robust competition at that performance level from Hawaii and because AMD had a reasonably strong market share then.

 

I don't really believe this 232mm^2 gpu that AMD is marketing as VR for the masses is going to touch a 980 Ti, but if so, damn I will probably wait for one of the cut down Vega cards.

That wouldn't be a bad thing considering how huge a die the Fury X has, that card must be expensive as hell to produce.

980 vs 980ti cards is a huge difference. 980ti is based on a binned Titan.

Ti is supposed to be a cheaper titan, and fill in the gaps in their current line-up. The X counterparts makes less sense, but, in the case of the 380X for example AMD made a product in a unique price bracket.

The 980/Ti, 280/x, 260/x, and 250/x will disagree with you. Not to mention you're not forced to pay the extra cost for the enthusiast cards...targeted at enthusiasts....i.e. people who want the best of the best and don't care how much it costs.
