Another micro usb breakgate. Imo that connector looks very fragile to 3,5 jack. Lost 2 devices from cheap micro usb charging ports.

Why that would just make headphones more expensive, and if you want a dac/amp you can get portable ones that are cheap and work with phones. Since some people might want to have specific dac/amp with their home setup.

I see the point as android is using type C which is everywhere so headphone companies know there will be a market. As lightning well adapter for adapter. With 3.5mm I could use the same headphones on my Iphone and Android. Glad I got a 6s plus without all this nonsense

They could make two ports so you can charge your phone and listen music with new plug? Either way it better be some meaningful advantage, not just for thinner phone.
Also, people cry like they buy phone every few months and that next will come with this and they will insta-buy new phone. To add, like they'll never ditch their earbuds for new in time or something. Please.

I may eventually replace my ear buds, but I paid like $80+ for them. Won't replace them until they die. Same with my HD598's, which were considerably more expensive. Some people might buy new audio peripherals at the drop of the hat, but I suspect those people are either above average wealthy (and thus a relative minority) or people who buy cheap $20 hipstreet or Sony headphones/ear buds that suck anyway.

i dont get it other than pushing wireless headphones forward there are no real benefits to dropping the 3.5mm jack.  for average use wireless headphones create more problems than the fix

But that's not what the Macbook and potentially the Iphone 7 are designed for - Apple intends you to use wireless keyboards, mice, headphones. You're supposed to use the cloud or wireless hard drives to fulfill the job of transferring files. Now you may personally prefer wired peripherals, and that's fine. It's just that consumer electronics are trending to become more wireless, and these design choices reflect that. I don't think it's as much a decision to make the phone thinner as it is a decision to remove an unnecessary, and in many ways, outdated port.

 

 

I think you sir, are missing the point. <insert picture here>. Bluetoooth is great, and there are some advantages to digital audio output, but your case blocking the headphone port is a terrible excuse. That's a problem with the case manufacturer not the phone or the headphone jack. Bluetooth headphones are easily available right now but I see very few people using them. That's likely because they aren't included by default, but removing the dac will make headphones slightly more expensive. Even if design choices are tending to wireless, wireless headphones haven't become very popular at least as of right now so until they do or show signs of it, this is a terrible design idea.

 

A digital and analog audio out would be ideal because that would show where consumer interest truly lies. When given both options what do the majority of people tend towards? Unless they can implement some unique features because of the fact that it's digital, I doubt there would be much reason to switch.

Yeah, it will take time before this new standard takes off and phones with 3.5mm jack will be released for quite some time. Doubt all next flagships from everyone would come with new standard.

So no worries. Even if that would happen, you can still buy currwnt flagships that will last for years heh.

Thinner is definitely desired and the average user uses the earbuds that come bundled with the device. So I don't see a lack of a headphone jack being an issue.

If they put a proper battery in the phone we wouldn't need faster charging.

 

If the phone lasted for an entire day then it wouldn't matter how fast it charged, because you'd charge it when you go to bed and it'd have a good 6-8 hours.

If you ask people if they want no headphone jack, there's a loud, resounding, "Hell no". But if you actually take the technology to market with a high level of quality, then people will try it and discover that it's not as bad as it seemed, and perhaps even better than current. If Apple does remove the headphone jack in the iPhone 7 and implements a high quality wireless alternative, Mark my words, in 5 or 10 years a majority of phones will lose the 3.5 mm jack.

1. I agree, not having a 3.5 mm jack will turn away a lot of people, at least initially. But as for thinness, there's data that suggests marketing thinness does sell more phones. In the case of the Galaxy S6 vs Iphone 6, the Galaxy S6 is 6.8 mm and the Iphone 6 is 6.9 mm, so about the same. But it gets worse; the camera bump on the Iphone 6 brings it to 7.7 mm. The Galaxy S6 was created by Samsung specifically to compete with the thinner iPhone, whereas the the iPhone 6 was created to compete with the larger galaxy. As a result, Samsung sacrificed removable batteries and SD cards, where Apple sacrificed thinness.  Neither company put out any significant marketing directly about thinness - but Apple cheated and used photoshop to remove the camera bump in their marketing material. This made the public perceive the S6 as only matching the iPhone's thickness, but the iPhone as increasing size without sacrificing thinness, although that wasn't true. What had made the Galaxy series special, the larger size and better camera - was no longer exclusive to galaxy in the S6, causing it to sell poorly. What had made the iPhone series special, the thinness, was perceived as maintained while still adding a larger screen and better camera. Although direct claims about thinness were never made, Apple misled the public to believe that the Iphone 6 could compete with the Galaxy S6 on thinness, camera, and screen size. Apple's marketing tricks had won out against Samsung's bet to beat the Iphone's thickness.

I think we both agree that with current technology, removing the 3.5 mm jack will not benefit the majority of people. But what I'm trying to say is that Apple's trying to implement these new technologies first, before they inevitably become the standard for all phones. If Apple does remove the jack on the iPhone 7, it'll be a first generation change and of course will have many, many downsides. But in successive generations, as it becomes more refined, it will become another major differentiation for Apple's iPhone. Otherwise, the iPhone will become too similar to other phones and lose popularity.

Think you misunderstood what I meant in terms of the battery part. There are new kinds of batteries being made using all different kinds of materials that are much better than the batteries we see today. We're not going to be seeing these new forms of batteries in our electronics any time soon. Every phone now has more or less the same kind of battery, where the battery life then really depends on the phone's overall efficiency.

I agree, but what they should do is allow both options at the same time. Also I don't understand  "implements a high quality wireless alternative" is bluetooth not enough? Do you think the majority of people would even be able to tell the difference between bluetooth and something else?
