Android beats Apple in ditching the headphone port on smartphones

Forgive me if I'm overlooking something really obvious but isn't USB type C a ... you know ... digital output?  I mean, you can't exactly hook a speaker directly up to an optical cable now can you?  There has to be a DAC of some description.  If it isn't in the phone, where is it now?  Will it be any good?  Will it make compatible headphones more expensive?  I have questions about this... :P

 

Edit.  Just noticed two other people seems to have noticed this issue and no one has commented (or did I miss it?)

There will have to be a DAC built into headphones, unless it's possible to have an analog pin-out in a USB-C cable (like in a DVI-I cable) and still keep the DAC in the phone.

More expensive yes, although I would assume cheap headphones would just use a dirt cheap DAC that wouldn't cost much anyway (and thus not affect prices more than a few dollars at most -- if at all). And high end headphones would hopefully use a good DAC and not require an aftermarket DAC (or at the very least make good headphones more consistent). 

 

I doubt they'd be any bulkier (think about any wireless/noise cancelling headphones -- most have DACs I believe). I'm not sure about earbuds though, bluetooth earbuds are pretty bulky, but I don't know how much of that comes from the DAC vs. the batteries. 

 

Cheap headphones would have shitty DACs while high end headphones would have good DACs. 

 

The bigger issue that I see is compatibility. As you'd be very limited to what headphones would be compatibilte without a DAC. And because of compatibility issues, I would REAAALLY hope that Apple will put analog pinouts (and a DAC) in their lightning connector so a lightning to 3.5mm adapter could work with any headphones.  Either that or they put the DAC in the adapter itself without the adapter becoming bulky.

More expensive? Yes.
Lower quality? Bulkier? Not necessarily.

If you put a decent dac in the headphones, it will sound good, perhaps better than lower quality phones with built in dac. iPhones already have a decent one inside and so does most high end phones. But you can always get better. Pretty sure Sennheiser already has a mind-blowing dac. But that doesn't mean 3.5mm jack should be ditched. That analog output isn't gonna kill any option for a digital output. It's like you have to ditch sandals for shoes.

BTW, socks and sandals all the way.

Pretty dumb imo. People who actually care about their audio already invested in a nice set of headphones/earphones--some even going the extra step to add a portable dac/amp to the mix. Makes as much sense to ditch the headphone jack as it did for Samsung to ditch the SD card slot on the last Galaxy S series phone.

So the DAC is in some adapter they provide, so i could still use my fav. IEM or headphone, right?

 

It seems like a better alternative to Redmi Note 3 Pro, but well, the lack of SD card is a no go for me, and of course the lack of headphone jack

This trend of ditching the 3.5mm jack doesn't upset me that much.

It has to have been 2-3 years since I last used a wired pair of headphones / earbuds with my phone, bluetooth headphones are so much more convenient for me.

Even so, you need multiple ports for multiple things. If USB type C is actually better then a 3.5mm jack then great, give me 2 or 3 usb ports then please. Thing is, it's not better for audio and every wired headphones already use 3.5 mm jack. It makes things difficult.

You can't have a new world order without first doing away with the current one. 

 

Transitioning from one standard to another has always hurt initially, but when has it never? Even a simply change from micro-USB to USB-C means people have to repurchase their cables and adaptors and accessories, and there is always that painful early adaptor phase where accessories are few and far in between, and quality is far from guaranteed. I guess the question then is - are there sufficient benefits to justify such a move? 

 

1) Encouraging the use of bluetooth headphones. Apple blocked flash on iOS partly to galvanise developer support for its own app store. I can see them doing the same to push for the sales of bluetooth headphones (and in turn sell more of their own beats headsets). This is the most platform agnostic move (given that it doesn't care what the port on your smartphone is).

 

Currently, the biggest problems are keeping them charged, and pairing them. Apple now allows the magic keyboard, trackpad, mouse and Apple Pencil to pair with their respective devices automatically simply by plugging them into the lightning port. We would see something similar with the iPhone 7 where you can automatically pair bluetooth headphones to the device by hooking it up to the smart connector or something. 

 

2) Currently, there is a pair of lightning-enabled noise-cancelling headphones on sale for $800. I can just imagine Apple executives salivating over the profit margins of selling such products inhouse. It might sound insane, pitting lightning (limited to one company) against USB-C (every other OEM eventually), but remember that Apple products do have a fairly large user base, its customers have proven to generally be more willing to spend on average, and every device since the iPhone 5 and iPad 4 already sport lightning ports. So lightning is actually the more established standard here.

 

That said, I can see most companies just releasing headphones with interchangeable USB-C / lightning / audio jack cables and calling it a day.
