NASA Saves Kepler Spacecraft After Unknown Emergency Left It Stranded

This is great news !  but also weird. it just went away in a blimps. 
afaik they have not found any evidence of what could have caused this

Oh yeah. That picture looks real. lol what kind of super WiFi are they using to transmit all this information across space? And more importantly how much are they paying Comcast for their 2 million gigabyte per second wireless connection? I'm sure that would be sufficient for a 75 million mile trek.

And yet they are still massively underfunded

 

I would love it if they even just increased their funding by 25%. Back in the 60's, NASA funding topped off at about ~$28Bn USD (adjusted for inflation). Though to be fair, ever since Obama took office, NASA has had a pretty steady ~$18Bn USD budget. But they really need to push that budget up past $20Bn USD again - especially if we're going to ever start manned Mars missions.

 

If they took even just One Percent (1%) of the Defense Budget, and put it into NASA, NASA would get an extra ~$6Bn USD (That's a 33% increase).

 

While I don't support full disarmament or defunding of the military or anything like that, I DO believe they could spare 1% of the defense budget and give it to NASA

It's people like you (don't take this personally) that keep holding humanity back. Should we not feed the poor? Hell no. But the thing is that every country is spending way too much on things like the military. You know what I hate the most? People that want peace and still support the military. Military is the REASON that peace is threatened ffs. Imho every country should stop spending money in the military and use it for, well I don't know, maybe helping people instead of fucking killing them. Imagine if scientists trying to find a cure for cancer had the budget the US military has... Still I kinda went on a limb and off topic, so you're saying NASA is lying? While I agree, I feel like I can't really criticize the Americans for only spending $19 billion on NASA when ESA is only getting $5 billion (4½ billion €). And the Canadian Space Agency gets $0.32 billion US. So each American pays $60 to NASA per year, while each Canadian pays $9 to CSA (plus pennies to ESA, where Canada is an associate member).

Oh I agree - The EU and Canada are far behind. But Canada only has a token space program - at least compared to NASA, and even compared to the ESA.

 

While we have EXCELLENT Astronauts, Scientists, Engineers, and Aerospace companies, we don't launch our own rockets, and we don't really design our own rockets either. Canada is simply too small to compete on the same level of NASA - but I think we could contribute more to the ESA, for example. The ESA as a whole could do MUCH MUCH MORE than it currently does. The ESA should rival NASA in engineering and technology and initiatives (ESA Mission to Mars, ESA space station, or at least many more modules to the ISS from the ESA), etc.

 

Or we could start an initiative with the US and Mexican governments to create an NAASA (North American Aeronautics and Space Administration - or you know, whatever catchy name we can come up with) - something akin to the ESA, but where we contribute the same percentage of GDP as the US does, and it's a much more collaborative process. But this is a Pipe Dream

 

Frankly, a "United Nations Space Administration", funded globally, would be kickass too.

 

But on a realistic notion, both the ESA and NASA could do a lot more.

I am not uninformed dude. I'm well aware of what NASA does and is. I find it as no suprise at all that all 3 of you people acted fast to ridicule me. That's just what society has trained you to do to anyone that questions ideas ideals and big government agencies. So the trove of pictures released by NASA from their various Apollo missions of Earth and those that are from the ISS aren't real? I think Space Exploration is cool, and spending more on it isn't such a bad idea. Though I do agree that there are more important things that extra NASA funding could go for. Though honestly I've been on the fence about private Space Agencies (Like SpaceX and Virgin Galactic).

Fun fact about space exploration: The technology developed for humanity to travel and survive out there has been massively beneficial down here, even for the poorest on our little blue rock.
Heard of space blankets? The things distributed at every refugee camp or aid station on Earth?
Solar cells... artificial limbs... freeze dried foodstuffs... water purification tech... chemical detection systems now used on planes.
The list goes on and on, simply google 'NASA spinoffs'.

Funny isn't it? How our most idealistic and hopeful endeavour actually helps us.

Anyways, hating government agencies is more how people are trained. Hate them but be apathetic about doing anything about it. TSA for example. Everyone hates the TSA, yet they're still here f*cking up everything for everyone.

Most people like NASA because they are one of the few agencies that not only doesn't f*ck sh*t up for everyone, but actually does substantial amounts of tangible positives with tax dollars. I like photos of Uranus that came from the Voyager missions. I like keeping up with the happenings of the ISS and, every once in a while, see it fly over my area in a dark starry night.
