OK this is not new or anything (at least to this forum) but its News according to the media.....

Last year Wardle exposed a mechanism in Gatekeeper that would allow hackers to bypass the protection by infecting software that has already been approved by Apple. Essentially, once an app was approved by Gatekeeper, it was always trusted, even if it started distributing malware later on.

The update didn't address the deeper problem: trusted files can still be used to distribute a variety of shady software. Basically the columnist concludes that Apple is not better or worse than Windows when it comes to security. The only difference was and still is the focus of the attacks. *take axe, cut knees of Apple owners*

 

Honestly I don't have much of an opinion to add that can be construed as informative other than that I and many others have been spouting this for a while.

Well for one UNIX is more secure second Macs have a smaller community. Macs cost more so gullible people, AKA young kids would be using windows. Also macs are notorious for better security updates that are faster

This has been known for a long, long, time. The reason they don't get attacked as often is because it simply isn't worth it for most people. It makes more sense to create attacks for Windows PCs since Windows is, by far, the most used desktop OS. People that write viruses or phishing attacks can gain more traction on Windows systems. If the situation was reserved OSX's security would be as much swiss cheese as Windows'.

What's nice is I've noticed ever since the windows 7 era, people seem to be attacked less often. It became a little harder to get attacked as far as I can tell.

 

98% of people get attacked because of stupidity however. Think before you click on things. read. Everyone just wants things so fast they don't bother checking their bases before just wildly clicking on things. I've seen some very well done phishing before, from email too. The email address it came from is always the dead giveaway. Think people!

Despite what Apple has been saying for years and Apple users want to think, OS X isn't very secure and has become an increasingly large target for malware as it picks up market share. I think it's also worth pointing out that Macs are usually the first computers to fall at computer security hackathons, before even Windows.

 

In today's world, the same principle as Windows applies to OS X: have an anti-virus, and be careful about what you download. Even with Linux you need to watch what you download and where you download it from now, but it hasn't reached the point where you need an AV yet.

I feel the same. I don't run any anti virus programs but I am not an idiot when it comes to downloads. Nothing torrented or pirated or shady.

STILL, even otherwise safe-looking sites can be compromised in some way and begin distributing malware. Case in point, the recent Linux Mint hack, wherein someone implanted a backdoor in Linux Mint Cinnamon ISOs and managed to distribute this infected ISO to 700k people before it was caught.

Been saying this for at least 2-3 years now. Surprisingly a lot of people in computer science use Macs and usually they use the "macs don't get viruses" argument when I ask them why they use a Mac. I should really start bookmarking these articles for when they try to make that argument.

How does this make it as news? Anybody even remotely competent about virus and malware would know this. Likewise, any competent landscaper knows that grass is green.

 

One analogy I go by is this; Imagine your Windows PC is a house with a lot of locks in a bad neighborhood. Similarly, imagine a Mac is a house with few locks in a really good neighborhood. Neither are immune to attacks, but it's very unlikely the Mac house would be broken into.

well, my dad's mac that had been upgraded since 2008 till today and had never been "taken care of " in terms of viruses and malware. when i ran avast on it last month, it had a couple hundred viruses and malwares. so i will say that they are not immune but the mac users do not really look for it much thinking that they  are immune. my macbook pro has never had any viruses in about a year so there is that.
