rant on pc shops taking advantage of customers

so here my little rant on how some pc shops will take advantage of their elderly or less tech savvy customers. prime example my grand parents just got scammed out of some money for something they really didnt need.... so my grandparents use their computer maybe 3 times a year, lately it was crashing so they brought it to a pc shop (they didnt know i was good at this stuff and fixed them up for people) the person there said they needed a new motherboard and it would cost them upwards of 300$ yes 300$ for a motherboard for a old computer probably using lga775 or amd equivalent.... well computer died she then charged my grandparents 200$ to transfer a couple files from the dead pc onto a usb stick... yup a good ol 5 minute job... then convinced them into buying a 1000$ top end desktop... keep in mind they only use their pc a couple times a year and for very minor stuff like taxes and to backup pictures from their camera...

so 1200$ for something that should have really costed 500$ for a decent laptop.... or 70$ to buy a used motherboard on ebay... this truly makes me lose faith in humanity, are people really this money hungry that they cant give good advice and do the right thing here ?

Eh that's not that bad.  I'm sure it took longer than 5 minutes to diagnose the computer and transfer files.  The $1000 computer bit maybe, but it's probably what they had in the shop.  They make no money sending them to best buy to buy a laptop, so they're stuck with offering what they have access to.

My local store is $299 to do a premium virus scan, clear cookies, and OS refresh. Also +$50 for Hard drive speed up. They wanted $239 for a 3450. A 3450 that was used!!!! Also $129 for a 80gb HDD that was used!!!

@Midnitewarrior4 while that sucks for your grandparents, a competent repair shop will pretty much NEVER sell you a random motherboard off ebay, unless you provide the part yourself and sign a non-liability agreement that basically says you can't blame them if the repairs don't work, since the board might be DOA.

 

The reason why is because the parts they get from their suppliers come with warranties and RMA processes, in case of DOA equipment.

 

Also, the high cost of the motherboard replacement could be:

1. They replaced with the same model of OEM motherboards. I use to do repairs at Staples (EasyTech), and OUR price for them was often over $200 or more, before we even take our cut of profit. OEM motherboards are stupidly expensive if you buy them through official channels.

2. The cost of labor - remember, a skilled technician isn't cheap. While a motherboard swap on a desktop isn't terribly complicated (Nothing like a Laptop board swap), it's still time consuming enough that the labor can start to get a bit pricey.

 

Sure, your grandparents should have came to you, but meh, they probably just wanted to get it fixed asap.

Well it's hard for you to understand but your grandparents have no clue how much hardware costs and what is difference between $300-$1000 laptop. 

 

All they might know is that it has better components but they don't know how much better (specific numbers and impact on performance).

 

As mentioned by other people here, the store they went to probably isn't that big and it's stock was low so they had to give them what they had available to them instead of making your grandparents wait for weeks for the right parts to arrive.

 

 

If I came to the store and was expecting few hundred dollars and they would say over a thousand I would be shocked same as u, but then I am not familiar with how much repairing something costs.

 

And you have to keep in mind that it's a business and it's priority is to make money.  People working there do their job how they are told to. It doesn't have to mean they will deal with customers same way they deal with friends or family. (Often they will rather look after business's interest over customer's).

 

It would be nice if everyone wanted the very best for everyone else, but that's fairy tale and while some places are nicer and more reasonable to you, the others are not.

as a PC shop assistant formerly and desktop engineer

 

yes we sometime have to charge such high prices because of the small profit margins we earn from the job we do here

 

we are providing a service to the user

 

but they still get treated like 3rd class citizen

 

expect to get something fixed in 30 mins tops etc

 

rush to a place in 15 mins when a system breaks down

 

and the money your grandparents spent on goes into the pay of the workers and rental of the shop space

 

you cant expect to get a PC fixed for free

 

they need to spend half a day to fix PC issue which are genuine cases like data or power loss for VIP customers etc.

 

 

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

I'm not. Basic check fee is €100. For data transfer its €80. Installing OS is not so bad at €35. That includes drivers. Anything less is cheaper. But this is from larger retailer, actually something like Newegg. Rest of the shops follow in that same price range. But thats only for service, not hardware. Hardware follows kinda same path with prebuilds. And if you are starting with prebuild, it will be more since they need to order parts in.

 

Another thing is that those companies, like any other store, are always trying to sell you what would give most profit to them. Its worse if shop uses bonus system for clerks. Who ever sells most stuff or more expensive stuff, gets bonus. I've seen it happening in local electronics stores. Thats why you are biggest fault here. You should have been as tech support to you grandparents as you know better than they.

Yes, in this case it was extremely high but he probably saw them walk in a saw the $$$ signs fly by. 

 

As a former person in tech sales - elderly and 'soccer moms' were the easiest to get to fork over $1,000s. It wasn't really a rip off, just making them buy more than they need (ex. high end ultra book for basic browsing). It made me feel dirty so I had to quit :/

Indeed - and even the margins on that high end ultrabook would be razer thin (heh). They make much more money off the labour/service charges for repairs.

 

Think of it this way, when your car breaks down, and you need maintenance, and the bill comes to $800, you might be ticked, but you pay it anyway, because you can't do it yourself. Even if the parts might have only cost $50. The rest of that is all labour charges, so the mechanic can rip apart your car and get to the part, etc.


If you have a cousin or whoever who is a mechanic, then they might do the job for free, and just have you buy the part needed. Saves you $750.

 

Is the mechanic ripping you off in this scenario? Hell no. You're not an expert. You can't do it yourself. So you pay a professional to do it for you. That professional demands a premium value for his/her services, because they can do something you cannot.

 

I cannot say for certain whether the OP's grandparents got ripped off or not, since I don't know what the exact issue was, how much time was spent repairing the computer, etc. All I can say is that, the grandparents cannot do it themselves, so they paid a professional to do it for them.

I walked out of a job, and shopped the guys in the first tech related outlet I worked at.  Disgusted at how they handled computers based on the gender/age of the owner.

I run a pc repair shop and I make 15 bucks a job. Contracted labor, paid by the piece etc...but at least I love my work.

I am a paid professional, but only when I am at work...and getting paid.

Then surely you must be able to see how easy it is for people to rip others off on that pay model. Where as if you knew you were to earn a set amount each day that temptation would vanish.

The need to actually make money is sometimes a burden for small businesses. Unfortunately for us, we are not HP and Dell who can survive off of making 20-50 on each computer they build. Same goes for services. Installing windows? $100. Doing a small data backup of files to a thumb drive, $50+. Doing a simple tune-up, $100. Doing ANY diagnostics, $50 up front. That's not a rip off, that's barely enough to pay the guy doing the work and still get a profit. It's also covering the cost of when they come back and have a problem (aka, warranty work). 

 

1. We would OFTEN quote outrageous (but accurate) prices to fix old computers. Getting a NEW oem board for your OEM computer is often VERY expensive, time consuming, and a BAD purchase for the customer. Its a waste of money and we want them to realise how bad of a decision that would be. We would never recommend use some used board from ebay. $300 CAD ($226 USD) is not crazy at all, and remember - in order to actually make money, they are likely charging to make 10-20% profit. 

 

2. Computer is dead... that is a data recovery. It's pulling out an old failing hard drive from a crashing and now dead computer, and manually recovering files. Potentially hours of work. Maybe not, but, often times there are set prices to account for potential problems. $200 ($150 USD) for data recovery is not outrageous. 

 

3. $1000 CAD for a computer - I think thats about $700 in USD. But, it's not outrageous. Likely they are charging $150-200 on top of the parts cost in order to actually make some money, which results in a ~$500 USD computer. That's not very ridiculous, depending on what they are putting in it. 

 

 

So, without seeing the exact details, I think they made off pretty well.
