Ubisoft has a message for PC Gamers

I've heard the "we care about PC" story too many times with all of those times proving the exact opposite.

Uplay isn't competition when it doesn't let paying customers play their games. At least Origin is really good and has great customer service despite EA's questionable decisions on pricing. Origin and Steam (though Steam's customer support doesn't exist) both work great and let me play my games unless they are from Ubisoft. GOG is great too, no DRM.

I did say that though, I agree. Uplay used to be absolute garbage. (It might still be for MP games, but I haven't played one in years). Last time I used it was a few weeks ago and it seemed to work decently. No disconnects, fast loading, responsive pages and fast downloads. If they continue to improve it, then it could be just as good as Origin. 

 

Most important things imo that need improving for Uplay are

 

1. Security. People often report their accounts get compromised even without passwords being stolen. I don't know how this happens but I believe it and I've seen it. I have seen this on Origin too, but EA customer support fixes the problem very quickly.

2. Online connectivity. It is worlds better than what it used to be. But it still could be improved, having downtimes of up to 3 hours every few weeks is pretty ludicrous when your playing games that require online connectivity.

Don't forget the fact that to play rainbow six and farcry 4 with friends you needed to portforward, and some people simply don't have access to their router.

Maybe if they even bothered to try and fix games months after release I could do my best to believe, but for now when I see that a game is made by Ubisoft I usually stay away from it.

PC is incredibly important to us. There are plenty of incentives to do a good PC version. Personally it’s important – a I play on PC whenever I can and I want the thing they play at home to be the best possible version.

They say something like that pretty much every year, and then we get garbage like ac unity and watch_dogs.

 

All the features they are promising here should be taken for granted in a high budget full priced release, and ubisoft is part of the reason it is not.

 

In the end the only thing to do is, and has always been, wait for release and see what reviewers have to say. Don't fall for the preorder bait, it's just a gamble.

nVidia are pretty good on Linux in terms of drivers but it is a shame we don't yet have things such as Shadowplay and all the other benefits that GeForce Experience provides. As for AMD, they are playing the long game now with all newer developments being made for the current and newer generation cards rather than older cards.

 

the performance is still terrible across the board for linux gpu drivers, except for intel ones (which incredibly enough are better than the windows ones)

Not really, Valve prooved you can get better performance on Linux than Windows with their Source games when using an NVidia GPU and that was 3 years ago.

It's possible to do but difficult because the openGL ecosystem has been neglected, has a myriad of issues such as tools, documentation, driver conformance etc which makes it very painful to match directX. There are well optimized openGL games so it can be done but developers seem to think it's more difficult.

 

The good news is that a large part of the industry has admitted the problem and as a result decided to create Vulkan from the ground up so that it will not suffer from the issues that openGL had (including the driver performance issues). I think that was the right decision, starting fresh, rather than trying to fix openGL ecosystem.

Ubisoft has multiple studios. Its a mixed bag. If you look at Rainbow Six Siege you know they still value the PC market.

 

However we can't paint all of Ubisoft the same color given their track record of disaster PC launches.

 

They can say what they want with PR, but I no longer care about who the publisher is and what they promise.

 

I just look at games on a case by case basis, and only consider buying after release and reviews. The old school way of purchasing decision is still infallible.

Unfortunately, publisher does matter as a factor. Warner Bros. is a prime example of a publisher ruining it for their studios. Arkham Knight didn't have to be the mess it was known for on PC, if WB just decided to delay the game's release. Additionally, Mortal Kombat X no longer has support on the PC version. It sucks that the developer studios got their hands tied down by their publishers, though in most cases, it is not a problem.

When a game dev creates a game for the console 1st THEN ports it to PC (or when a Publisher pressures one to), the completely wrong way around in terms of game quality, that really doesn't show 'care' for the PC people.

 

Creating a game for PC 1st, with all the optimisations, quality, and features this entails is the best way to start. You then 'dumb' it down so that a console can handle it.

 

You don't start with a dumbed down game for consoles 1st, then make it work on PC, then add in features, because you almost always end up with a un-optimised mess of a game that still lacks certain things like HD textures and such.

 

But we know why they do this, which do u think it easier and cheaper

I bet you tried Uplay 7 years ago and now you consider it universally and permanently bad without even trying it again. I used Uplay for Far Cry 3, 4 and Watch Dogs and it was great. definately looks better then steam and it also runs faster then steam's browserapp.

That still doesnt negate "95% of games do". Besides, you can make witcher 3 look like the e3 demo if you have the hardware because the settings are still there.

Does uplay allow offline play? If not, then it sucks.
