Newgrounds is seeking Crowdfunding support to stay Afloat.

Tom Fulp of Newgrounds.com is asking it's users for monetary support to help fill the paygaps where ad-revenue falls short and launched a Supporter Upgrade page that would allow users to choose from a monthly subscription or an annual fee, as well as featuring an option for one-time donations. Supporters do, indeed, receive upgrades within the site, such as the ability to view the site without ads, the ability to change their username, have an animated forum signature, a nod of appreciation on the "Wall of Honor", and have early access to exclusive content.

Tom currently asks for 1000 monthly supporters subscribed as the first major goal, but hopes to one day reach 10k supporters to help fund more creative contests within the site and sponsor artists who make quality, premium content, not to mention hire more staff. The minimum funding goal is also stated in the Supporter Upgrade page.

Pff, can't remember the last time I was on Newgrounds. I remember playing all kind of Flash games on there and watching Egoraptor's animation there. Those were the days.

Now I really dont go on it anymore

 

Sucks for them that they cant afford it anymore but I dont use it often enough to want to support it :/

It really is a shame, sites like Newgrounds, Kongregate and Armorgames really are the game sites of my youth. Its a shame they'll probably not manage to stay afloat for much longer.

Damn man. Where have you lived like 5-10 years ago?

 

Newgrounds, Armor Games and Kongregate more recently...those were the guys.

 

Back on topic , I think this really is a very obvious symptom of Flash dying. It's no wonder. Also , flash games are getting more and more obscure. That's due to the modern publishing of games. Anyone can get their game published through , let's say , Steam , with little effort. Back in the day , there was no way to do it without the help of a big publisher which would chew right through your money. The only way of getting your game out there to be enjoyed were online flash game sites.

Newgrounds, Armor Games and Kongregate more recently...those were the guys.

 

Back on topic , I think this really is a very obvious symptom of Flash dying. It's no wonder. Also , flash games are getting more and more obscure. That's due to the modern publishing of games. Anyone can get their game published through , let's say , Steam , with little effort. Back in the day , there was no way to do it without the help of a big publisher which would chew right through your money. The only way of getting your game out there to be enjoyed were online flash game sites.

Not only that unity web player is quite good

Pff, can't remember the last time I was on Newgrounds. I remember playing all kind of Flash games on there and watching Egoraptor's animation there. Those were the days.

Yes, Unity Web games are great , but that wasn't my point.

 

Publishing and means of publishing have changed.

 

Real , big publishers were not an option for a very small indie team (or just 1 guy). People used to be reluctant on spending money online , even more so on games. So the only option was income through advertisement. And Newgrounds was a place for people to do just that , and a very popular one. Nowadays , we have Steam , we have Itch.io , we have GoG , we have so many means of digital distribution that support a very wide selection of games and of income alternatives. The thing is , the big players have changed , just as the demand of the people has.

 

As great as Unity Web games could be...how much do we play games on the web anymore nowadays? And let's not include Facebook games, that's a different thing entirely.

It's sad to hear that Newgrounds is struggling but I totally get why. Loved the site in the early 2000 and you can't deny that it helped shape "Internet culture" as we know it today, but the Internet has moved on. All the good animators moved over to sites like YouTube, and there are entire sites dedicated to porn flash games now.
