According to Palmer Lucky, Your crappy PC is the biggest barrier to VR adoption

Qub3d

Because porn is not a thing, right?

VR is not only for games, you know that, right?

It is expensive as hell sure, but it is not pointless, you can be damn sure about that.

Well it is not productive in any way. As i said, it can be cool in games but other than gaming? Porn? That's it?

Well it is not productive in any way. As i said, it can be cool in games but other than gaming? Porn? That's it?

Gaming is the main reason its being made and pushed, but the comments that they have made about GearVR suggests that its widely used for media consumption too.

If you don't care about resolution as much, you can be watching it on a 100" screen or so.

Social is also looking to be pretty big. Mix of games and social sounds really fun. Lets people play the games they used to play in person easily if they've all left their home town or stuff.

And I've seen more productive uses of it too.

The story that I liked the most was basically someone working at an Architect firm or something similar.

He took the building they were making and then recreated it in full scale in Unity.

This allowed him and all the team to have an idea of how the whole thing would look before its built. I think it then confirmed some design choices and actually altered others.

I don't think I'd argue that its not very productive right now. I do however think that some industries are going to benefit wildly from it when the correct set of tools come out for them.

Actually, I saw this yesterday too, its a sort of developer video behind the scenes of the Gallery, a big upcoming VR - exclusive game.

Basically, they used the game they are making and allowed the voice actor to be in the scene as they record his lines. Combine that with the mocap suit he is wearing allowing him to move around the scene and his full body poses, its a really really cool thing in my opinion.

Not just from a " They are using the game to develop the game" sort of way, but also just letting voice actors be in the environment in cases when its not possible (games, animations etc).

I dont really mind the cost of VR right now, I want the best possible VR experience and if I have to dish out more money to do so, then so be it. Do I wish it was cheaper? Hell yes I do and it will get there eventually, but Im not willing to wait that long. I want it now and I will have it now :D

The hype is that it's freaking amazing.

Like, get lost just painting pictures in 3D space on the Vive for HOURS amazing..

It won't die, it's not pointless.

It's just expensive right now.

I won the 3D TV argument, and I'm already calling the same for VR. It will lose steam after they start launching at those prices. It won't die, but it won't be a common in-every-home kinda thing these companies are hoping for like game consoles are.

I challenge you to a gentlemen's bet! I'll see you in a year Good Ser! (someone screenshot this...)

All I know is that I had an Oculus for 1 week and even when sitting down to play single player games that did support the thing I ended up not using it because it's uncomfortable and a hassle, and not that much more immersive or interesting than my bog-standard monitor.

VR could become great if there was a whole truckload of content made especially for it. But I would still do 95% of my gaming on a monitor, so the headset needs to cost 5% of my monitor to make sense.

To be fair, those were dev kits so the comfort wasn't their biggest concern. It will probably feel better when released. I have glasses and tried both the vive and rift. The vive was somewhat comfortable but wearing oculus  w/ glasses was irritating. (I also have a BIG ASS head) :P

Let me say first I'm firmly in the 'if it costs half as much and I can try it out first I'd buy it' camp.

But valuing it at 5% of a monitor because  it has 5% of the functionality of a monitor is not fair. I have a Saitek X52 Pro HOTAS that I use for one game, it cost twice to three times as much as my mouse yet I use my mouse for every game I have. Should that piece of specialist hardware have been almost free to 'make sense' ?

Y'all need a big dose of context, he did said that but look 3 words after that to see that he knows the barrier of entry needs to drop, in other words there going to be making it great, then keeping that experience while reducing the entry barrier so it can go mainstream, which IMO is the best way to make it common, that's how a lot of tech went mainstream to begin with, like smartphones did.

VR certainly does have other productive uses, but can still be limited to adoption rate, software support (if game engines are the only thing supporting it, it may not be used in other productive areas), and the possible health hazard of using it for too long. I feel like AR can certainly do much better (when it becomes more refined) than VR in the other industries.

Agreed. In reality, the Rift is technically two monitors that are aligned to make you feel like you're in the game. According to his theory, it technically should be 2x the costs of monitors, which is really not the direction I want the price going. I'd really prefer if they created two versions of the product, a high end one and a low end one for those who want to just try it out (like me).

If it wasn't so damn expensive, I could use the money I'm expected to spend on it right now on a better GPU or CPU to meet the actual requirements.

Nothing wrong with that system for 1080p gaming, newer games might stress it at the higher qualities. I have pretty much the same, except a second 780. Waiting on the new GPUs this year, might upgrade.

Some people just can't afford, so don't hate on them for that. Don't compare your situation with others. The main problem with this whole thing was that we were told a price and it turned out to be double it. Sure most of us knew it wasn't going to be that price, but still bad communication for along time can bring quite a bit of hate.

I'm not hating their situation, just the fact they are bitching about "costs" etc when their pc can't even run it smoothly. It's like this new car coming out with all this never-seen-in-a-car tech aimed that those who can drive above and beyond most normal people (ei top end rigs), finding out it costs more than initial wording then bitching you want it for less when you know u have the shittest motor skills and hand-eye coordination which makes you more likely to drive it into a stationary brick inbetween blinking than a straight line (ie: "crappy rig"), thus making the overall enjoyment of the car a waste of money and time.

So what if it costs more, its not like there's 100+ grade AAA+ titles waiting for you lot to play. Save.

I am a stundent, with limited money, my PC has 3570k and 7970 GHz edition. below the recomended specs, and I am still going to buy Oculus, not right now, but probably Q3 or Q4 this year, before I upgrade my computer in any way.

Everything is about prioritizing, if you have the money for a 800€+ computer (mine was around 1200€ 2 years ago), you can afford Oculus Rift if you want to.

When new tech comes out, its always expensive, and often it isnt that good. But Oculus Rift, is new tech that is cheap and great for what it is, its new tech. If you dont want it for the price you can buy it for, then wait, until the tech is better and cheaper, or get a worse and cheaper product. Simple as that.

HTC Vive and Playstation VR is going to be more expensive than Oculus Rift, mark my words.

I dont know how long I will wait,at least going to wait until the pre order is over and its not sold out. but if something new is announced, that looks like its going to be better for the same price that Rift is now, then I will wait. right now, Oculus would cost me 750€. and right now thats most of what I have. best case senario, the dollar stops being strong, and my local currency (NOK) stops being week like it is now, and then get back to the normal, then Oculus will be 20-30% cheaper in my currency. some of me doubt thats gonna happen tho.
