In the recent video by LTT (Crazy Asus Camo Motherboard - here) Luke mentions the PS2 ports alot. What are they actually for?

Keyboards and mice mostly.

It's a port that is not used anymore, because USB exists, but some BIOS can't recognize some mice/keyboards sometimes because drivers and because PS/2 mice/keyboard require no drivers: it will always work.

Something not so cool about it is that it features NO hot swapping. Meaning: if you want to plug in a PS/2 device, you would have to shut down your PC, plug it in and turn it on

Input devices like mice and keyboards.

 

They have overall significantly better compatibility with motherboard BIOSes compared to USB keyboards, especially ones that require drivers to function.

That was the only port to plug in your keyboard/mouse into when I was growing up, and now people don't even know what that is. That's why I feel old.

 

Just to be clear though, I'm not saying OP is stupid/ignorant for asking that question.

It is an old serial connection used for mice and keyboards. Green is mouse, purple is keyboard. Even older is the AT serial connection for mice and keyboards. I still have an old AT keyboard that I hook up to a PS/2 port via an adapter. Like others have said, no hotswapping. This is a pain.

I keep them around because SpinRite doesn't like USB keyboards.

It does have a driver actually, but the real advantage is that there is no such thing as Polling Rate and it doesn't have any delay.
