Oculus Rift Consumer Edition Pre-Order now Live!

Arcanekitten

Why did they include an XboxOne controller or the headset?
They should try to get the price as low as possible not putting unnecessary stuff in the box.
There is no way VR will get anywhere with such a high price as the hardware cost is already immense to even drive the thing.

And it doesn't even include the touch controllers at that price...

R&D costs I guess?

The thing has been in development for a hell of a long time.

that`s true, but if you look at all the features it has, it doesn`t really justify it for me :(

to game or not to game, that`s the question

I think it costs much, but not so  much that I am not going to buy it.

These USB requirements are weird. I understand there are multiple devices/sensors using USB, but why not combine them all in 1 USB 3.0?

People are willing to pay that much money for smartphones, so if you think of it that way... it's not that crazy.
And a few years from now this price will come down.

However, too much for me right now considering I'd need a PC upgrade as well to even use the thing.

Smartphones are different than a gaming device. I paid my Z3 Compact 600$CAD and it is the device that I use every hour of every day. A smartphone is a small pocket PC and has way more functionality than the Rift.

But when it does come, the price shouldn't go much beyond the $350 cost of the DK2. "We want to stay in that $200-$400 price range," co-founder Nate Mitchell said. "That could slide in either direction depending on scale, pre-orders, the components we end up using, business negotiations..."

Guess they weren't able to do what Nate said.

you shouldn't compare the price of a device with the price of a peripheral. not to mention a lot of people get a phone on contract not upfront. this is very expensive for a supposed consumer product.

Doesn't matter what it is, the hardware and production costs are very much comparable.

Yes, new technologies usually are pricey, but $600... damn son.

I tried the DK2 but this has to be a lot better to justify that price.

I never saw VR as anything more than a dumb gimmick.

I'm still not impressed.

why do so many good cases only come in black and white

That's because they added tons of unnecessary stuff.

At least $100-200 are just the controller, stand, headset, VR remote, as well as the 2 included games.

Most people that have a high end rig already have a controller.

And the remote, headset, and stand could've easily been add-ons that are sold independent from the Rift.

yes but use isn't. if something costs "too much" to be viewed as "worth it" by a consumer then it isn't ready for the market. And oculus tried to make a consumer device not a premium high end one for selective customers. Look at every other vr headset coming and tell me the oculus still looks competitive.

I think 2 OLED screens with a total resolution of 2160x1200 would be pretty epxensive by themselves, probably about 150$ are going straight into those. Plus the rest of the hardware, the bundled peripherals, and a 40ish% profit margin.

Doesn't look that way when you are told to invest $600 or more in other regions into technology that could end up the way of the 3D TV.

i didn't expect $600 but can't say i'm not surprised

-cost of custom display

-cost of custom lenses

-cost of frame

-cost of camera

-cost of manufacturing

-cost of R&D

-cost of misc. employees

They're selling this at cost, and that's still a lot of money that needs to cover the cost of actually making it/developing it.

The real problem with the price now is the adoption rate might be much lower, causing developers to steer clear.

If people can afford $400+ graphics cards than the price point doesn't seem as ridiculous.
