I had a 4.5GHz 2500K and a 9800GTX+ in the same rig a few months ago. I was debating whether or not the iGPU would actually be better than the dGPU.

This rig has a 5820K and an HD 7950. So not really that over-kill.

Since this is a club, I figured I'd explain why I have my PC is configured as such. My PC's specifications are in my signature. Basically, I spent my budget on a SSD, 16GBs of RAM and my WD drives. My girlfriend and roommate bought me an i7, motherboard and RAM for my birthday. My 750Ti was migrated from my older system. I want to upgrade, but I have to be able to justify it to myself. EVGA's 980Ti Kingpin is my dream card, for now. I doubt I'll get one. I know that it is overkill, but it is what I want. While I have lots of games installed on my system, it isn't the main usage. I use the system, mostly, for work and virtual machines. This is why I went with the added RAM. Gaming is what got me into PCs originally, but I struggle with playing games, as I always feel I am wasting precious time that could be used learning something new, or perfecting what I've learned thus far.

I'm rocking the 4790K ... with just the iGPU. :o

In Fire Strike I get around 3 fps on the graphics tests, 25 fps on the physics test, and about 1 fps on the combined test.

In Cinebench I get 796 on the CPU and about 31 fps on OpenGL, iirc. (I'm not at my PC right now to check.)

In Unigine Valley and Heaven I get around 3-5 fps.

I'm having issues besides gaming, though, between 4K video editing/playback being slow in some software, graphics drivers crashing and recovering sometimes frequently, and even periodic graphics-caused BSODs.

I'm thinking of getting a new GPU as soon as I can afford it. I'm undecided though between a GTX 970 now and hang onto it for 3-5 years, or get like a GT 730 or GTX 750 Ti now, then a GTX 1070 when Pascal comes out. I'm kinda waiting to learn more about Pascal.

Also I think my laptop may almost be the other way around - it sports a Core i3-6100 and a GTX 970M. I haven't benched it yet, though, as it runs Linux and the above benches don't ride the penguin. Also I have problems with the WiFi on it, only getting signal a few inches away whereas my phone can go like 100+ feet if there's almost no obstructions.

Oh, and a significant chunk of the $2200+ I spent on my PC is storage, including three 4TB hard drives. On the first one I copied stuff from a bunch of older drives, quickly filling it. (The older drives are still around as backups.) I just finished filling the 2nd with data right after Christmas. On the 3rd, I've cloned my boot drive a couple times to it as backups, and I just created a 2TB partition on it for storage.

I believe my usage is similar to @Gikero - running VMs now and then, as well as editing audio and video. (Also, I have 32 GB of RAM.)

edit: shit i got the wrong way around.

Don't worry, same here. 970 and a FX-4170. The 970 was broken on arrival so I can't tell the GPU utilisation when gaming but it won't be over 70% :D

Take one of my rigs off maybe? Xeon E3-1231v3 rig got an R9 380. The GTX 650 Ti got rotated into the dual Xeon E5-2620v2 rig and the GT 610 got rotated into the Core 2 Quad Q9300 one.
