Steam gamers, don't fall victim to this new scam

Steam users are being targeted in a new fraud campaign, one that targets users that were banned via the Steam VAC(Valve Anti-Cheat) system.

 

Since its introduction, the Steam VAC system has been implemented in around 400 Steam games and allow game makers and especially multiplayer server administrators to ban users that cheat or act out online.

 

The system has been deemed by most gamers as a plague to the Steam community, who at one point or another have a close encounter with the notorious VAC popup.

 

For many years, there were hundreds of Youtube videos that advertised magical cures to get around this popup but only tricked into installing malware on their computers.

 

 

Don't buy any subscriptions for mobile deals to remove a Steam VAC ban. It makes no sense!
Security researchers from Malwarebytes discovered one such campaign, after stumbling upon steamunban(dot)fr, a website called Steam VAC Remover that promises to remove Steam VAC bans.

The website is nothing more than a fraud, tricking users into buying various mobile deals and subscriptions, as a way to repay the site's operators for removing the user's VAC ban.

In fact, as you'd probably guessed it, nothing happens. Users are left waiting and staring at a silly animation on the site while the crooks make off with their money and lie in wait for the next sucker that lands on their website.

"Nothing [...] is going to miraculously unban your Steam account from a VAC slapdown. Once the ban is applied, that’s it, no amount of downloadable mobile content or fancy looking console boxes will rectify that," said Christopher Boyd, researcher at Malwarebytes. "Sometimes people get away with a bit of cheating, but as far as Steam goes the consequences are irreversible. Don’t cheat, and you’ll be playing on safe and secured servers for a long time to come."

well... its these people that they want to protect, because no one gives two shits about an actual hacker losing their account.

If you get VAC banned, there's a 99% chance that you're cheating. If you believe in a VAC ban remover, there's a 100% chance that you're an idiot and deserve to be scammed.

I mean really how f*cking hard is it to not give your sh*t away for free? I don't give someone 50 bucks just to 'borrow' it and I don't give 50 bucks to someone I don't know with the promise that they will pay me back.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

I'm not sure how you can manage to get banned without cheating.

So if you have something like Cheat Engine open and not using it in game, you'll get VAC banned for it.

I'm not sure how you can manage to get banned without cheating.

If I recall correctly you could get VAC banned if someone sent you a message on IRC that had a portion of code from any known hacks in it while playing a VAC game because VAC actively scans your system memory. Systems like VAC and PunkBuster are necessary but still a HUGE pain in the ass sometimes for some people who legitimately aren't hacking. VAC is kinda shit because like 5% of all CSGO games I play still have a hacker in them.

Also my friend got VAC banned from Rust a long time ago because he deleted game textures so he could see through walls, pretty fucking stupid to VAC ban someone on a shit early access game for doing something so dumb and easy like going into the game folder and right clicking and deleting wall textures. The real kicker is he didn't get VAC banned while playing he got VAC banned the next day while he wasn't even playing it.

Cheat engine isn't explicitly for cheating in multiplayer games, I personally have used it to give myself items in many old single player games.

A Youtuber I watch, Northerlion, used it for a while to do user suggested themed or challenge runs of The Binding of Isaac.

It can be used for all kinds of games and programs to do all kinds of things, not just cheat in online multiplayer games.

The problem is that VAC can't tell the difference between the program being left open after you were screwing around in GTA: San Andreas or if it is actually being used to cheat in a multiplayer game, if VAC detects it running at all while you are playing a VAC protected game, it can ban you.

It will only ban you if you select the game exe I think. I mean "I have seen people" (not me  :unsure:) use it on games such as Gmod and there has been no ban. I guess it depends on the game. 

 

However, it only works for offline games unless you have scripts because memory values are validated server side as well so when you updated your client side memory value, the server ignores it and gives you your actual health it has stored not the "changed version".
