Tech Gifts for Non-techies Giveaway!

A new router for my dad, the asus RT-AC87U wireless-AC2400 dual band gigabit router, as his old crappy one drops signal every minute, it has a max data-transfer speed of around 1MB/s (if it manages to work at all) and it covers only half the house.

I'd like to give my sister a mechanical keyboard because she's taking textiles in university and she finds it hard to write long essays on her laptop keyboard and she dislikes tech but is forced to by her uni. She has never tried a mechanical keyboard before but I think she would love the experience and I think it would be beneficial to her.

I'm trying to build my Dad a small studio in my old bedroom.  He's been using some pretty poor headphones.  I'm not even going to mention the brand, it so bad.  So I'm totally going to get him a pair of Sennheisers for the Holidays.  I have had the HD 280s for years and love them, but the fatigue sets in after an hour of listening.  I can deal with it, but my Dad is a bit ornery.  Reviews have said that the 380s are more comfortable so I'm leaning toward those.

http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-380-PRO-Headphones/dp/B001UE6I0G/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1449605675&sr=1-1&keywords=sennheiser+hd+380

He makes music on Logic Pro X.  I got him some tutorials for it, but I think the best help I can give him is getting him some proper cans.

Kthnx

So my mom refuses to learn how to use touchscreens, she just says "she can only use something she can physically push", I'd like to get her a new smartphone so she doesn't have to use her old flipscreen Samsung phone anymore (that once fell into the toilet actually, still works, don't ask me how :o )

Something like this would be great: http://www.amazon.com/HTC-HTC6525LVW-One-M8/dp/B00K2VMWH6/ref=sr_1_6?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1449137091&sr=1-6&keywords=htc+one+m8&refinements=p_n_condition-type%3A6503240011"

Or a similar one, I don't know much about those.

Awesome idea for a giveaway guys btw. Whoever gets chosen, they're going to be so happy ^^

This reminds me of my mom soooooooooooooooooo much :D She tried out several cheap smartphones and she still can't work with touchscreens --'

Anyway, we have no tablet at home so maybe if she had a tablet that she can learn to use from the couch, things would be better. So a Nexus 9 would be great for her.

Thanks for this giveaway Linus, such a great idea :)

A Nest Thermostat, for my mom and dad.

My mom and dad have done so much for me, but neither them or I can buy a replacement for their unusable thermostat, due to monetary reasons.

Their current thermostat is VERY hard to use, and even a tech-head like me cannot use it. They just turn the AC off, and use several fans and heaters around the house.

I want to get them a gift like this for Christmas, but I cannot afford it. They've done so much for me, and have ensured that I would have a bright future. They still refuse to take any extra money I have, or buy them a meal. They donate to charity regularly, but don't give themselves the luxuries that many other people have. They also work relentlessly, and both still work when many would retire.

Good luck to all, and thanks for providing this opportunity, LTT team!

Solar Charger from Anker
My god son is a boy scout and doing a lot of outdoor activities with gps staff etc etc and he is a very enviromental saver guy. So with this he can easily charge a lot of his device clean and you can easily hook up even a small peltier fridge on it!

I'd replace my moms aging desktop for a Chromebox As she really only uses her PC for web browsing. The Chromebox is small so it would save space on her PC and it would be much harder for her to mess up Chrome with it's automatic security scans, plus there is a lot of help information that, if needed, would allow me to easily help her over the phone. :)

My dad is still using a full sized 10 year old monitor thats only about a 19" screen.  The poor guy is going to hurt his back trying to lean in to look at the screen! lol.  I feel like 27" would be too big and overwhelming for him but he could really use the clarity of a good 25".

My girlfriend is trying to get into PC gaming and is currently using an old HP Probook 6440b.

http://www.neweggbusiness.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9B-34-260-084&ignorebbr=1&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleBiz-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleBiz-PC-_-pla-_-Notebooks-_-9B-34-260-084&gclid=Cj0KEQiAnJqzBRCW0rGWnKnckOIBEiQA6qDBastNsVBpy3XQB2EW7e-Rk116M0SkVLAuqCnp8gn1StYaApz08P8HAQ

^That thing actually. I upgraded the ram to 4GB and removed the HDD and put in a SSD but can't do much with that processor.

Did a benchmark on it last night and it scored a blistering 330 on 3d Mark Vantage. Would be sweet if I could put the $300 I was going to spend on a graphics card for her into other parts in her system with this: http://www.amazon.com/MSI-GTX-960-GAMING-2G/dp/B00SAYDRP8/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1449625180&sr=1-3&keywords=GTX+960

Regardless though, good luck to everyone in this thread  :D

A budget gaming rig for my girlfriend's family in Canada. None in her family knows how to setup, configure, or even build a computer for them and they're only using a really old laptop. Her brother likes to play MOBA's but can only play it when a friend comes over and bring an extra equipment, and her mother loves to go browse the internet. I guess a computer that can run decent would help them a lot since they've only been there for around 3 years.

I'd really like to get my mom a Mohu Sky 60 Outdoor TV Antenna. She spends so much money on DirecTV and I know that she wants to only pay for internet like I do in my apartment. Sadly because she lives around 25 miles away from the major TV network broadcast stations, she would need an outdoor antenna, as an indoor one would have a hard time picking up clear signals. I would really like to get her this myself but I just recently moved into my apartment and holy cow does electricity cost a lot of money (I blame my probably very inefficient AC, refrigerator and water heater). I would really love to help my mom save more money and this is probably the easiest way to save $100+ a month by canceling the satellite service.

I would love to get this Acer 27" Monitor for one of my closest friends this christmas!

Right now I am just finishing up my own PC build and he is looking at starting his as well. I think a great way to start him off is by replacing his old 18" 4:3 monitor that is currently attached to his old pc.

Step 2 is to help him build the rest of the pc! haha

Thanks LTT!

Good luck to everyone and I hope everyone is able to have a wonderful time this holiday season!

A DAC for my father's Audioengine 5+:

Cambridge Audio Azur DacMagic 100 - Black

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0078Q35PG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A1SX1R00E2EUMR

I suggested the speaker for him, then he told me the bass is not satisfying.

I'm visiting him in South Korea on 26th, so I thought I would get a DAC for him in hopes for solving the issue.

I was originally looking between Schiit and Audioengine, but this wolfson DAC would make him happier no doubt.

JUST found the shipping fee to canada is crazy, any high quality DAC would do if it's against the rules or can't be shipped.

SCHIIT DAC:

AUDIOENGINE DAC:

A Radeon R9 290 for my Dad.  He is an architect and uses a lot of 3D modeling software so this card would be a big upgrade and really increase his computer's speed.

My mother has told me multiple times how slow her laptop runs. I believe that adding an ssd to it will make it run much faster. I am planning on getting her an 850 pro, since I have had nothing but a good experience with it. Now I can hopefully reallocate my gift money to a blu-ray player for them, and then some.
