EVGA Launches GQ Line of PSUs

RazrLeaf

The new line OEMed by FSP includes 650, 750, 850, and 1000 watt models. Gold-rated and semi-modular. Seems strange that they need another G-line of PSUs, but if their market rate comes out to be cheaper than the G2 and GS series (their MSRP on EVGA's website is lower than G2 and GS), I won't complain.  More quality PSU options never hurt anyone.

I don't understand what makes these better than the G2 lineup they already have. Aren't those gold rated and fully modular?

That's not the only measure of a PSU's quality. You can have very efficient PSUs that have poor build quality, for example.

EDIT: I think these are actually more budget friendly units, given that they come with fewer accessories and such.

these are/should be cheaper as going off @Aniallation's PSU teiring, FSP's units rank as either "decent" or "meh". unlike the G2 and GS which are ranked as "best"

Agreed, these seem more budget oriented, though there are some design tweaks on the GQ line that I prefer to the G2 (the FDB fan and wire fan grill).  Performance wise, it seems that G2 > GS > GQ.  Now if only there was a G2 variant that had a wire fan grill and a FBD fan...

EDIT: fixed a typo. Thanks @thekeemo

It's would be a good option if the pricing was much lower

Well, yeah I know... But the 750G2 scored like a 9.8 or something on JonnyGuru. You can't really do much better than that. I guess we will see why they decided to launch the new lineup, because I'm not seeing any reason except to offer a better variety of capacities.

Given that these are made by FSP this is probably going to be cheaper than the G2 and GS lineup. FSP has some decent PSUs, but is nowhere near the level of superflower or seasonic.

If they price them right, they can get a very good hold on the PSU market.

I always find that JonnyGuru gives high scores for pretty much everything, so I tend to not go off it so much, and rather look at the review itself and the testing results. OEM can also be a good indication of quality, though it is less reliable (FSP strikes me as a slightly cheaper OEM than their SuperFlower and Seasonic units).

I can second this. Seasonic (almost all lines) and SuperFlower Leadex are fantastic, but the FSP work on the GQ line doesn't look bad at all. It looks loads (pun intended) better than the G1 series (also FSP).

If these are FSP group regulated PSUs, these are a replacement for the crappy G1 group regulated models. It looks like the G2 models were replaced by the GS series. Not entirely sure about that seeing as G2 units are still easily available and my knowledge of PSU OEMs is lacking so if someone wants to correct me, I'd appreciate it.

A NEX 650G1 is also the reason why my Strix 970 died, and my server grade SSD failed in less than a year... I can't trust FSP after all that shit happened. Now I'm stuck with a new strix they sent me that no one will buy off of me...

G2 wasn't replaced by GS, both are still being manufactured.

I think I've read something about GS being launched because they couldn't keep up production of the G2 series with the demand for it. I'm not sure about this though, so take it with a grain of salt. G2 is superflower and GS is SeaSonic.

Well both of them is pretty damn good, so i don't think anyone will disappoint the GS series if they're going to abandon the G2 production. I'm currently own G2 850W PSU and all i can say it is definitely worth it. Never regret of placing my money onto this.

I believe it was EVGA that said that they were having a lot more demand that what a single manufacturer could supply. That's why they went with two G2 series and I guess it's the same reason they now have three

I hope they're not going to use them to replace their Super Flower units like Rosewill did with its Capstone psus.

"Better" isn't the only reason a company might introduce a new product. Companies often introduce new products just to hit a certain price point.

its a step down from g2 then, its still a lot better than a lot of bad psu's out there so these might be the new budget psu's.

So glad I got my g2 when it was so cheap 750W g2 for $59 hell yea

Well, those are EVGA's current G1 and B1 units that are FSP. Some FSP PSUs are pretty solid, and I guess we'll just have to wait for more some professional reviews before we can determine the factual quality of these new power supplies. However, according to Jonnyguru alone, it seems to be a solid unit, and I'd trust it to be pretty decent seeing as it's an FSP Aurum PT unit.

It's not an Aurum PT unit, it's a custom platform.

As for FSP, it's no secret that they can make very high quality power supplies. It's just that they also make a lot of PSUs that are average at best.
