ASUS ZenFone 3 Will Have USB Type-C, says ASUS Chairman

(click for sauce)

So a couple of tid bits here. First, USB Type-C on more phones, great. Second, Half-Life ZenFone 3 confirmed.

To say that the ZenFone 2 made some noise would be quite the understatement. The device has made quite the splash with some pretty high tier specs for cheaper, a trend slowly becoming more common these days. 4GB of RAM, 256GB of storage? This device was crazy, and while the options it had made shopping for it a bit more crazy as well, it's by all means a great device. With that said, we have confirmation from Jonney Shih, chairman at ASUS, the the ZenFone 3 will not only exist, but will move to the new USB Type-C standard.

In an interview published today, Shih was asked about when his company would start moving to USB type-C for its smartphones, and the executive responded that we’d get our answer in the form of the ZenFone 3.

However, we still have no idea when the device will be available, or what the device is even going to be like, but if I had to guess, pretty dang similar with under the hood improvements. Release date? Probably early next year, maybe 2nd quarter. I've been mistaken before, though.

So what do you guys think? Type-C is the future, it makes sense for ASUS to move their smartphones over to it, right? Does the ZenFone 3 even excite you, would you upgrade to it?

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

I don't care at all about the ZenFone 3, even tho I think the ZenFone 2 is a great device.

But I like that they want to implement Type C. I hope at some point it will kill Apple's Lightning connector. I would like to have one connect for everything.

What's the pros of type C?

faster speeds

I just bought the zenfone 2 like a few weeks ago... and there's another one coming out

Type C isn't faster.

USB 3.1 is faster. Type C is just a different connector.

Eh. Very unsurprising. It's almost like saying "the sun will rise tomorrow".

What's the pros of type C?

It allows you to insert the plug either way, much like the Lightening connector.

It also has a much higher connect-disconnect rating.

Incorrect. Type C has absolutely nothing to do with speeds. Its the interconnect.

I'm excited. I'm hoping their sales were good enough for them to perhaps attempt a high end device next year. Something to truly dethrone the rest.

If they were to make something with metal, I think they have the potential to make a really amazing device seeing how far they've come in only a few years.

What's the pros of type C?

Reversible connector, theoretically more durable than Micro USB, more pins with the possibility of USB 3.1/Thunderbolt/Displayport built in.

faster speeds

Type C is just a connector, its independent from the USB standards.

Something with metal?

You mean another one of those stupid aluminium bricks?

I think the best design currently has still OnePlus with the One. It fits perfect in my hand, doesn't slide out of it and even tho the case is made out of plastic it doesn't look cheap like so many other phones.

holy shit I know... look at the other posts you don't need to triple confirm something

Not sure if you knew it already, but Type C is just the type of connector.

It doesn't have to do anything with the speed.

;)

Look at the posting times. They were all pretty much posted at the same time.

You could avoid it by knowing what you're talking about before posting ;)

If only I cared about phones, oh well, I'm surprised more phones don't already have type c

It's still quite new..

You say stupid, I say beautiful, to each their own.

It should have metal edges at least. They just feel better IMO than plastic.

I hated the OpO. Oversized for what it offered.

Functionality over design.

Also oversized? There are so many 5.5'' phones on the market and they're all of similar size. I like the size, because I have large hands.

Also how is something oversized for what it offered? For 350€ it has awesome specs.

The specs were nice, I didn't like the skin, it was buggy while I used it.

Oversized for a 5.5" screen. Many companies fit bigger screens in the same sized body, or had a more compact footprint.

A phone made of metal is no less functional...

It is less functional, because it is havier than plastic and it slides easier out of your hand.

There is around 3mm of space on each side of the screen. So you could safe 4mm.... Wow.. I'm impressed xD

You might find that to be your experience, however it is not mine.

The LG G3 was 10mm shorter. Which is quite a bit overall.

What's the pros of type C?

Faster charging, rated for more insertions, reversible connector, and if the is using the 3.1 interface you could have 10GB/s transfer speeds.

Well, all future phones should just come with Type-C USB port. So nice to see.
