A pilot project to suck CO2 out of the atmosphere and turn it into pellets that can either be used as fuel or stored underground for later has been launched by a Vancouver-based start-up called Carbon Engineering.
 

 

"It's now possible to take CO2 out of the atmosphere, and use it as a feed stock, with hydrogen, to produce net zero emission fuels," company chief executive Adrian Corless told the AFP. 
 

 

As we reported back at the time of the test plant launch, direct air capture works just like these new solar cells that split water into a hydrogen fuel - the CO2 recycling plant extracts CO2 from the air using a giant complex of fans, and combines this with liquid hydrogen split from water. This mixture can then be converted into solid pellets of calcium carbonate, and either heated to between 800 and 900 degrees Celsius to release pure carbon for use as fuel, or stored for later.

 

This looks promising. We can remove a green house gas from atmosphere and turn it into gasoline or just store it underground as pellets to counteract emissions. I'd like to see this company go into full production.

But hey, there is a cutting edge technology that can do this with solar energy. They are called plants and trees

And we can use renewables to run that carbon capture apparatus. Tge american navy is using the nuclear reactors on the aircraft carriers to extract carbon from water amd make jetfuel with it. It is an interesting concept.

But there is so little CO2 in the air you would pump forever to get any substancial amount.

Yeah CO2 is part of air, but only about 0.039%. No laughing gas and methane are the biggest/worst green house gasses we have, and they primarily come from agriculture. Want to cut down on that? Stop the over population of the earth (30-50 million extra people per year, primarily in the third world, like Africa, middle east and Asia) and decrease the overall population from the 7+ billion we are in the world. Would also stop most wars and migration problems.

 

This is just dumb, and proves people don't understand even the basics.

Yes but we better get rid of the coal power plants first, the put out a LOT of CO2 as well as sulfid and other terrible stuff. Would be a more efficient way to reduce the CO2 output.

Like that will do anything. Sure it can capture carbon but burn more to do it and the atmosphere is sorta giant. I think people should focus on terra forming other planets and realize we can't save earth.

Nah, CO2 is one of the smallest issues. H2O is hardly something we can do anything about (or any real issue though in itself).

Like you can see on the link I provided, CO2 is the least harmful green house gas. Methane and nitrous are much worse (and there are worse gasses still).

But there is more co2 and it rising cascades all of the other gases. Especially because co2 is the one we make the most of too.

If we can use less CO2 to take more CO2 out of the atmosphere, wouldn't we still get a net loss of CO2 in the air?  What about using energy to power it which doesn't produce any greenhouse gases?

Every energy source produces greenhouse gases. Some not as much as others, but they all do.

I'm still waiting for a long time functional fusion reactor. And I have to wait 20 years :unsure:
