Nobody has any idea, and this thread will quickly become full of speculation, fanboys, and arguing. Intel is better and will always be better. AMD is better low-end but Intel is high-end so I wouldn't bother. AMD will show Intel what's up because they will have more money to make a better CPU.

Nobody can know that yet. It is rumoured to have 40% higher IPC than current AMD CPUs, I have also read about 12 cored mainstream versions. Do not know if any of it is true.

If it's going to have 12 cores, I'm sure it's single threaded performance will be as bad, if not worse than an 8350..

except...jim keller left amd on september 18th...elvis has left the building.

if what AMD is taunting is true that zen would have a 40% IPC gain over previous amd's flagship cpus then that would bring them on sandy-bridge levels which is not bad but not that great eiter...one thing for sure i wouldnt hold my breath for zen...specialy now that keller is gone.

Don't know don't care, I'm not switching cpus (have 4790k) and don't like amd cpus (gpus are fine by me though) due to past issues, but I think it will be better than a 9590 of our time, by how much idk, hopefully it forces intel to step up its game but I doubt it as the silicon cpu is nearing its end so how much they can pull out has a limit, plus adding more cores only goes so far and that tends to be amd's solution.

Jim Keller is more of a contract guy/freelancer, his work at AMD is already done. When he left AMD, it was a sign that Zen is already done with all the designs, now Zen has to go through the validations, 14nm/16nm problems...same as Intel with broadwell and lakes in the sky before it's finally released.

The guy leaving AMD will have no impact on Zen at all. It's already been designed. These things take years to design and fabricate so if Zen is ready for 2016, it was being planned in 2014. Keller leaving will impact Zen's successor.

He actually co-engineered the K7 design, not the K8.  Although all the K8 was is the K7 with better cache and more cores, so it was trickle down effect.

I doubt AMD is actually going to do this but historically the way AMD beat Intel with performance was to move the memory controller into the CPU and thus get a vast improvement in memory latency and bandwidth. Even with inferior computation units if you can reduce the latency significantly the pipeline stalls will be reduced and it will benefit almost all software dramatically.

 

Given that and the ever increasing distance in memory access and performance from the computation nowadays CPUs are more cache than anything else. What I think would be really interesting is if AMD came out with a CPU using stacked memory. We have GPUs coming out like that and CPUs would benefit a lot from a massive decrease in latency. Then of course we are stuck with particular models at 8GB or 16GB but it would potentially make the machine a lot cheaper as the motherboard would be both simple and no need to buy separate RAM. Zen isn't this but I think its how you beat Intel by adopting earlier.
