A shell company with a patent linked to Intellectual Ventures, the world's biggest patent-holding company, has quietly filed a new lawsuit in the Eastern District of Texas against a vast range of computer peripheral makers and sellers.
 
The complaint (PDF), filed last week under the name Minero Digital LLC, demands that 26 companies pay royalties on USB hubs, which link together multiple USB-enabled devices. The defendants include the nation's biggest electronic retailers, like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Fry's, and Amazon. Also named are relatively small networking companies like HooToo. Major manufacturers are also included; Minero says that Belkin alone has eight different brands of USB hubs that infringe its patent.
 
Minero is asking for unspecified damages and an injunction that would shut down sales of the dozens of different product lines named in the complaint.
 
The link between IV and Minero is clear from USPTO assignment records, which show that US Patent No. 5,675,811 passed into an IV holding company in 2003, and then was transferred to Minero in April 2015.
 
The '811 patent describes a system in which "intelligent daisy-chainable serial" bus connections create an "efficient unambiguous method" of linking together various peripherals, while being connected to a base station. It sounds and looks something like what a bunch of stuff connected together with USB cords and ports might look like, but the term Universal Serial Bus (USB) doesn't appear anywhere in the patent.
 
 patent originated at General Magic, a company that began as an internal project at Apple.

 

 

This is insane...this should have been made invalidated a long time ago...You cannot even split video outs...I think even thunderbolt uses daisy chain to connect multiple devices..Thank god they mentioned peripherals.. else there are daisy chains even in networks and it is even used for multi core communication in processors..

I think if this goes to court they will probably lose since it has become so generic that cannot enforce a patent on it, we are talking hundred or even thousands of products, if that is not a generic method then I don't know what is

The whole patent system should be, internationally, revised and chcked.

Patent trolling should be invalidated, and ALL future designs should go through a federal organ during the planning phase, to check if there is a patent that your product may infringe. If this federal organ can NOT find a patent that your product infringes (although even if human error occurs), you cannot file an injunction. YOu can ask only for royalties from the date of discovering the infringement, not "since the product was launched"

I'm gonna patent the concept of patent trolling to stop this fucking nonsense or at least to demonstrate the deep flaws of the useless system.

been thinking the same...

patenting the methodology of using patent lawuits in hindsight to hurt sales of an long time established product for personal gain.

I'd rather just remove the burdensome system than inflate it and pay more to run it making it more pervasive, rife with conflict, and invasive of inventors and developers.

depending on the patent, some can last 25+ years.
