PSA: Don't run GTA V with an i7 4790k (even at stock) w Stock Cooler

Alright, gets the dealio. Whilst saving up for a new cooler for my 4790k (put my h110 on my gpu) and was running the stock cooler WITH ANTEC FIRMULA 7 PASTE, it hit 99c after about half an hour. GTA seems to heat up components more than load tests.

 

be wary of this, and check your temps if you have a stock cooler. I now have a pure rock and it hits about 70c

I feel like I did this for awhile and was completely fine... You sure you got nothing running in the background?

I checked that, I even tried other games and it was just GTA v

You're doing something wrong. The stock cooler thing is irrelevant. It should not run that hot. You probably messed up the mounting on the cooler.

I don't want to come across all patronizing... but you did do the thermal paste properly right?

 

Just a small uncooked grain of rice in the middle and don't spread it.

 

Only reason I say this is the sheer amount of times issues like these are caused by improper thermal paste application.

Wat? I never broke 70C on my 4670K and now at 4.6 with my GTX100i I never break 60C under full load

But I otherwise have no idea why yours would be hotter in GTAV compared to a stress test.  Maybe because your GPU gets hot, spits air into the case and then heats up your CPU?

Running 2600K on stock cooler, at stock clocks, never had thermal issues in it's 3 year lifespan and counting... (also never changed the thermal paste)

 

I don't see an issue there.

I checked that, I even tried other games and it was just GTA v

 

Is your voltage set to the default (Auto) in your BIOS? Try setting it as low as it will go manually while maintaining stability, it may improve your temperatures. The Auto setting tends to be a bit generous.

This is not normal. A stock 4790k should not hit that temp even on the box cooler. Especially not while gaming.
