Could a machine replace you?

Minzo

Funny you ask, I actually monitor machines that have replaced other people at my work. So no I can't be replaced. Because you will always need a human to monitor and repair machines.

What do you think. Could a machine replace you at your work?

If yes, how soon do you think that will happen?

If no, why? I think you're wrong.

can a machine be unemployed?

Because 90% of LTT is unemployed.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Maybe not now, but there is nothing stopping machines from becoming so advanced they could replace that work as well.

A big dildo could replace me I guess.

Don't flatter yourself. It wouldn't have to be that big...

I monitor repair and replace bad parts. A machine would have to be very advanced to troubleshoot and replace parts on other robots. So I think I will be safe for a good while.

Tech support for businesses. I'd say they probably would find automated support over phone and email QUITE difficult to do and even then most clients would be furious.

In the hospital where I work? No. The tech has gotten so much better and more safe for people, which is good, but no machine will be able to replace me.

I'm a designer.

90% of the annoying parts of my job machines could do, and actually do in the places smart enough to invest in them, because the initial costs are huge, and hiring students and fresh graduates is cheap.

The fun 10% of my job maybe Watson can do, but so far not so well as a human.

In theory some AI 10-20 years from now will maybe be able to do it.

The unemployment in my field is any way very high, so I feel fortunate I even have a job.

Not even a machine would be needed to replace me. All that would need to be done, is to simply remove me from existence as a waste of resources. Pretty sure robots wouldn't be needed to procastinate...

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

No machine will be replacing an on air talent, remote worker, commercial recorder, and station organizer at the top radio station in the area.

I work at a help desk for a steel plant. We're implementing a self serve portal soon which will (hopefully) minimize the number of phone calls with idiot users. For now, we still need someone to sit in this chair 24/7 to answer the phone in the event of emergencies and do some other clerical stuff that hasn't been automated yet. The job could be fully automated right now, but sadly our plant isn't exactly the pinnacle of modernization. My guess is that in about 5 years, the bullshit clerical work will be automated and the whole answering the phone portion of the job will be outsourced to India. Of course, it's probably optimistic to think that this plant will still be running in 5 years.

I reckon you could replace my old boss with a machine, for sure.

It would be easy to program a machine to act like an arsehole all the time.
