my current fx-4300 vs pentium g3258

So I recently started to play arma 3 and o get 20 fps, which I'm not surprised about as I am with amd.

Will a pentium give a lot better performance as I am not really in need of 4 cores.

 

My GPU is the XFX r9 280X

Don't even bother with a G3258. It'll do BETTER than the 4300 in ARMA but ARMA has some of the shittiest optimization ever.

I'm looking for something playable, I don't need it to be on ultra either, not really too fussed about graphics as long as it's got decent performance.

From what I've read all AMD cpu's are trash in comparision to Intel so I don't think I want the 6300 or even the 8350.

FX-6300 is comparable to a 4th gen i3!

 

But FX-8350 is some what close to a 3rd gen i5 in the right games.

FX-4300 bad in pretty much all situations. G3258 performs better, but also pretty bad CPU. I'd get the G3258 for the upgrade path to something decent. The g3258 won't perform well in any game unless you overclock, and even still then ehh. Although the G3258 should be better, you still need to OC the shit out of it and still only get like ~30fps

For reference, your CPU performs more like the one on the right (Still less though because your clock speed is much lower) and the left is an overclocked G3258. The FX-8350 and FX-4300 perform nearly the same in this game because it's a very very poorly made game

I wouldn't upgrade unless you get a 4 real cores Intel or better. If you can get a 8320 or similar for $125 or so and just drop it in that might be a good path as well

You gotta turn draw distance way way down. Even with a Xeon E3-1231v3 I have to do this to keep my fps lows around 50.
