Why Android phones have onscreen menu buttons?

smeek14

Ok so why do Android screens have onscreen menu buttons...  I hate them on my HTC One m8.  Will they ever be removed in the future?

No, they're slowing phasing out physical buttons. You can make them smaller with Sense Toolbox.

Software buttons are great IMO, I use them rather than hardware buttons (not really hardware as they are capacitive anyway) on my One Plus one, you can assign them to more functionality like google now swipe up can be assigned to any app, depends on the version of android you're running but with cyanogen you can customize it to how you like it which is great.

They're more aesthetically pleasing to many people, myself included, as it gives a more symmetrical and uniform design to the phone, giving the designers more freedom for the front of the device, such as making it smaller with a same size screen to one with a button.

Physical buttons break and become stuck  unlike onscreen.

Because onscreen can be very cost beneficial, it doesn't require any capacitive sensors and LEDs which can cost a tiny bit of battery and unlike physical buttons on-screen buttons don't wear down over time.

Only on the M8/M9 are they retarded because they're on top of a bezel that can already house capacitive buttons (like on the M7). On other phones they're alright.

I hate how they take up screen space.  They are the reason I am getting a samsung galaxy.

Why not?

There's no real advantage for physical buttons. They take space from what could have been a larger display, they require extra stuff and don't wear over time.

not all Android phones have these. it just happens your m8 uses it.

if you dislike on screen buttons you should have bought a samsung device, or a OnePlus.

there are ways to remove those on your m8 tough. it isn't easy, and you will have to remap those commands to other (hardware) buttons on your phone, wich will be near impossible.

so goodluck with that! :P
