Steam gamers already use Windows 10 more then any Linux distribution users combined.

The final version of Windows 10 hasn’t even been available for a week yet, and it’s already more popular with gamers than any individual OS X operating system version—and all Linux operating systems combined.

That’s what the July 2015 Steam hardware and software survey reveals, at least, as first spotted by Windows Central.

It's crazy to think it's already almost on par with windows 8

Doesn't it say 3.23% and 0.89% for mac & linux, whilst Windows 10 is 2.21%?

How is 2.21% > 4%?

Uuuuhhhh... no. Windows 10 has a total of 2.3% (64 and 32 bit), while Mac and Linux total 4.12%.

EDIT: "almost on par" it's 29% away..

Title, yes, but not content. First paragraph in the article still states that Windows 10 has more users than OSX and Linux.

How is it possible that the percentage of users on OSX, Linus and Windows increased all at the same time? ô.o

read the article, he stated how his calculation was done....

Windows dominates among Steam users, with 44.91 percent using Windows 7 64-bit, and 31.65 percent using Windows 8.1 64-bit. According to the numbers, Windows 10 64-bit can already be found on 2.21 percent of Steam users’ systems, with the 32-bit variant found on another 0.09 percent.

By contrast, the most-used Mac operating system among Steam gamers is OS X “Yosemite” 10.10.3 at 1.10 percent, though when you take all available versions of Yosemite into account, it’s found on 2.4 percent of all systems. All four tracked Linux OSes combined account for a mere 0.55 percent of use. (.25%+.16%+.08%+.06%=.55%)

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Linux is absolutely useless as a consumer OS. No amount of SteamOS or whatever is going to change that. Linux is a server OS, that can be used in certain workstations and thin clients. That's it though. Useless.

Your numbers however does not add up, as there are more MAC users than Win 10 in those numbers. Beating Windows 8 should not be an issue, as everyone using Windows 8 should have migrated to 8.1 a long time ago.

It's only been a week, so I can't really be disappointed, but I can say that that number should rise very fast and very high. There is no reason for it to not surpass both 7 and 8.1 this year. It is that good. Windows 10 has been the smoothest launch/upgrade ever done by Microsoft, and I don't think they get nearly enough credit for that.

No, what I mean is that Windows has increased by +0.02%, Linux has increased by 0.02% and OSX has also increased by 0.01%...

So there must be another OS that had to decrease theit percentage.

Maybe Steam OS. But that should also be listed under Linux...

Just because there aren't many games on it, doesn't mean that it is useless as a "consumer OS". Not every consumer is into gaming.

You provide no argument why it is useless.

Linux is extremely versatile.

Linux is extremely versatile.

It's useless due to a bad GUI, which is less than intuitive. There is a reason little Apple flew by and grabbed huge market share from Microsoft and Linux did not. Not only the nice looking hardware, but also because the OS is intuitive, easy to use and looks nice. None of that represents Linux. There mere point that you need to bring up a console to do anything useful, makes it useless. Everything you need to do as an end user, can be done via a GUI in Windows, as well as Windows being excellent at solving problems and issues by itself (their network trouble shooter is excellent). And then there's drivers. Windows Vista was the first MS OS, where driver support was really good at launch, and that has reached new standards in W10 (that can use most 8.1 drivers though), making everything automatic (especially now with automated driver updates via Windows Update).

All these things make Windows an excellent consumer OS, OSX being a good second contender. Linux is nowhere to be seen, and there is a reason for that. Utter useless.

Linux useless? Just because it doesn't have native game support or you don't like it?

Useless as a consumer OS, yes. Read my post above. For a "free" os, Linux should have a massive market adoption for consumers. There is a reason it doesn't. There is a reason Asus and other vendors scrapped their Linux SKU's of laptops, etc. It's shit as a consumer OS.

Linux's UI is fine o.0 In fact due to the fact that Microsoft's Settings and Control panel options are dotted all over the place (and many are deliberately difficult to find) Linux is actually better now.

It's pretty easy to navigate via the command line so most people do, but it's not because its GUI is wanting.
